      The company is dedicating significant funds towards training, scholarships, and collaborations to address this problem.

      An incident involving a U.S. raid at Hyundai’s Georgia facility illustrates the risks associated with relying on foreign labor.

      Automakers aiming to establish a manufacturing presence in the U.S. are confronting a major obstacle. This time, however, it’s not tariffs but a workforce issue. At Ford’s "Essential Economy" summit in Detroit this week, CEO Jim Farley cautioned that a deficit of skilled tradespeople is jeopardizing efforts to reshore production. Factories, infrastructure, and even AI data centers could suffer as a consequence.

      “How can we reshore all this if we lack the workforce?” Farley queried, referencing a national shortfall of over a million workers in essential trades.

      A Split Workforce

      Ford convened 300 leaders from the public and private sectors to discuss what it refers to as a productivity gap between thriving white-collar jobs and declining blue-collar industry roles. While technology and cloud companies are ramping up productivity, sectors like construction, energy, transportation, and manufacturing are seeing a decline.

      During his keynote address, Farley spoke with Labor Secretary Lori Chavez-DeRemer and Mike Rowe of the Mike Rowe Works Foundation to discuss the widening skills gap.

      To emphasize his point, he shared a personal story about a recent disagreement in his household between his son, who had spent the summer working as a mechanic, and his wife, Leah, who was not enthusiastic about the idea of him skipping college for a job in the garage.

      “My son worked as a mechanic this summer and he said, ‘Dad, I really enjoy this work. I don’t see the need to go to college,’” Farley recounted. “And Leah looked at me and said, ‘Is he serious? Should we even have this discussion?’ This is a conversation happening in many American households. It should be a topic of debate.”

      College or Trade?

      Farley noted that rising tuition costs often outweigh the financial advantages of a degree, particularly when there is such high demand for trade jobs. Skilled positions in areas like auto service, construction, and energy typically provide both stability and good pay, yet companies like Ford still face difficulties in hiring enough technicians to carry out dealership repairs.

      To tackle this shortage, Farley announced that Ford is allocating over $5 million for new training programs in trades, scholarships, and technical high school initiatives. According to Ford, this initiative could potentially benefit over 100,000 students and educators in the coming years. However, it’s crucial to understand that even if they reach that target, the blue-collar sector still requires significantly more workers.

      A Real Shortfall

      “If we succeed… when we succeed… we’ll deal with larger challenges,” Farley told Axios. “Currently, the issues we’re addressing are quite practical. I need 6,000 technicians in my dealerships on Monday morning.” Despite the push for more homegrown talent, the recent Hyundai raid highlights the ongoing problem.

      This lack of workers has already led automakers to explore unconventional solutions. As CNBC’s Andrew Sorkin noted, the automaker was effectively bringing in its own workers to fill the void. Then, in September, immigration officials detained over 300 Korean workers who entered the U.S. under temporary visas to install and supervise equipment.

      The crackdown prompted a strong reaction from Seoul, where officials cautioned that unless the U.S. government streamlines visa regulations for specialized labor, Korean companies may reconsider future investments in the U.S.

      Global Challenges

      Clearly, both foreign and domestic automakers are facing difficult circumstances. Without sufficient labor, the work cannot be accomplished. For Ford, this summit aims to position the workforce in such a way that the gap is bridged:

      “This is a call to action for business, technology, and government to dismantle bureaucratic obstacles and invest adequately,” Farley remarked. “The efforts we initiate today are about ensuring that America’s Essential Economy remains robust and prepared for the future.”
