Federal Deadline Makes EV One of VW's Top Sellers | Carscoops

Despite a strong showing in September, the ID.4 ranks as VW's sixth most popular new vehicle in the US this year.

In September, Volkswagen sold an impressive 12,470 ID.4s in the United States, marking a significant 176 percent increase compared to September 2024. However, sales of the electric SUV are expected to decline now that the EV tax credit has ended.

Electric vehicles have become a key focus of Volkswagen's global strategy, with a diverse range of models offered across Europe, Asia, and other regions. In the US, however, the selection is more limited, consisting solely of the ID.4 and ID.Buzz. Still, the ID.4 has played an essential role for the brand, becoming Volkswagen’s third best-selling model in the country during the third quarter of this year.

Last month, VW sold a total of 87,705 vehicles in the US, which included 73,444 SUVs and 87,705 passenger cars. The Tiguan LWB emerged as the most popular model, with 22,050 units sold, reflecting a 4 percent increase from September last year. The Atlas came in second, with 19,105 units sold, representing a 2 percent increase.

The ID.4 saw a remarkable rise in sales, landing in third place. September sales reached 12,470 units, a striking 176 percent increase from the 4,518 sold in the same month in the previous year. This one month contributed significantly to the total of 22,125 ID.4s delivered across the nation in 2025.

This surge in sales was not coincidental. Like various other automakers, Volkswagen benefited from a wave of consumers eager to complete their EV purchases before the federal EV tax credit expired on September 30. Although the 2025 ID.4 was not eligible for the incentive – unlike the 2023 and 2024 models – it could still be leased with a $7,500 rebate. Now that the government incentive has ended, it is anticipated that demand will drop over the remaining three months of the year.

In terms of overall sales for the year, the ID.4 stands as VW’s sixth best-selling new vehicle in the US, with 22,125 units sold, placing it behind the Atlas (51,181), Tiguan LWB (48,951), Jetta (48,610), Taos (40,524), and Atlas Cross Sport (24,282).

In September, VW also sold 2,469 ID.Buzz units, which is about half of the total sold in the first three quarters of 2025.
