Kia has announced the pricing for its stylish new K4 hatchback in Europe.

The introductory 1.0 T-GDI model is priced at £25,995, while the top-tier 1.6 variant costs £36,195.

The most affordable Golf from Volkswagen in the UK is priced at £28,150 for the Life model.

Kia's new K4 hatch is poised to challenge the segment-leading Volkswagen Golf. Now, with the pricing announced, the Korean manufacturer has made a move that will surely raise concerns at Wolfsburg. The K4's prices are nearly 10 percent lower than those of the German vehicles.

Both the entry-level K4 Pure and the base Golf Life offer 113 hp (115 PS) and come with a manual transmission, with the Kia generating its power from a mild-hybrid 1.0-liter engine compared to the Golf's 1.5-liter engine without electrical support. The starting price for the K4 Pure is £25,995, while a VW dealer charges £28,195 for the Golf Life.

      Value in Numbers

You can enhance your K4 with a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission for a total of £27,495, which would still be £655 less than the manual Golf’s base price. Moreover, Kia has not compromised on features to achieve this pricing. The K4 includes dual 12.3-inch dashboard screens, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, alongside a ChatGPT-powered AI voice assistant—similar to what is found in the Euro specification Golf.

For those seeking added visual appeal and luxury, the K4 is available in two additional trims at launch: GT-Line starts at £29,995, and GT-Line S begins at £33,995, both equipped with mandatory DCT gearboxes. In comparison, Volkswagen offers R-Line and Black Edition trims, but while the base K4 and Golf align closely in pricing, there are notable differences at the more sporty levels.

      Trims with Character

Kia provides the GT-Line styling with the standard 113 hp engine for £29,995 or an upgraded 147 hp (150 PS) 1.6-liter T-GDi engine for £31,295—options not available to buyers of the Pure trim. The top-of-the-line GT-Line S features a 177 hp (180 PS) 1.6 engine priced at £36,195.

Conversely, the petrol Golf R-Line is available exclusively with a 147 hp 1.5 engine and starts at £31,490, offering the option of either automatic or manual transmission (with DCT costing an additional £1,600 for the Golf), plus a diesel option that the Kia cannot provide.

The Golf features a broader range, with two additional trims—Match and Style—between the base and sporty models, along with GTE hybrid, GTI, and R performance models that the K4 lineup currently lacks. While Kia is likely to expand its offerings in the coming years, even on its first day, the K4's striking design, spacious interior, increased cargo capacity, and substantial price advantage may entice some potential Golf buyers towards Kia. Which model would you choose?
