A Tesla enthusiast claimed that a Waymo robotaxi almost collided with golfers at the Penmar course. Waymo clarified that the robotaxi was actually human-driven in preparation for a scheduled local event.
Alphabet’s self-driving division has recently announced its expansion into Denver and Seattle.
Over the years, self-driving robotaxis have drawn considerable controversy, and this week was no exception. Videos emerged showing one of Waymo’s robotaxis driving across a golf course in the United States, which quickly went viral, prompting many to speculate whether it was yet another instance of a self-driving vehicle acting inappropriately. However, it seems some individuals online jumped to conclusions too quickly.
The video gained attention after being posted on X by Tesla supporter JeffTutorials, who claimed, “a Waymo drove onto a golf course today and nearly hit several golfers,” adding that “FSD [Tesla’s self-driving system] would never do such a thing.”
In the footage, the Waymo is seen slowly traversing the grass, just off one of the fairways. A separate video shared on Reddit shows the car parking beneath a large tree.
Waymo swiftly took to X to clarify the situation as the videos gained traction, stating that it “was a human-driven car, getting ready for an event at the Penmar Golf Course.” No further details were provided, although it's been suggested that the vehicle was being displayed as part of a concert at the venue.
Given the widespread misinformation online, it’s easy to be misled by such videos shared without proper context. Even with Waymo clarifying the incident, individuals may still view the golf course clip and mistakenly believe the robotaxi was driving autonomously, potentially affecting public confidence in such vehicles.
Currently, Waymo’s fleet of robotaxis is the largest in the United States. Just last month, it announced plans to extend its services to Denver, Colorado, and Seattle, Washington.
