Two employees from O’Reilly lost their lives following a dispute at a store in New Mexico.

A man allegedly attempted to return an oil filter and requested free oil.

After being denied, he exited the store with the oil and opened fire outside.

If you still have hope in humanity, you might want to reconsider, as two employees of O’Reilly Auto Parts reportedly lost their lives due to an argument about an oil filter. The shocking event took place earlier this month in Albuquerque, resulting in the deaths of 18-year-old Jesus Valdez and 47-year-old Richard Newman.

According to the Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Office, deputies were summoned to the store on September 14 at approximately 5:10 PM regarding a shooting. Upon arrival, one of the victims was already deceased and the other was critically injured.

A Routine Oil Change Turns Tragic

Authorities initiated a search for the shooter and ultimately apprehended 27-year-old Ismael Rene Tena. He faces two counts of murder in connection with the incident.

The department did not disclose what triggered the shooting, but KOAT reports that it was related to an oil filter. The suspect’s father allegedly informed deputies that they visited the store to exchange an oil filter and request two additional jugs of oil, as the originals were reportedly “wasted” due to the incorrect filter. Essentially, it appears to have been an oil change that went awry.

While mistakes can occur, Tena reportedly became enraged and took two oil containers before leaving the store. The victims followed him outside, where the shooting occurred.

The senseless act of violence was shocking, and Tena reportedly claimed he feared for his safety as “both employees were shoving and punching him.” However, deputies did not find any physical evidence to support that assertion.

Now, two lives have been lost over a couple of oil containers that likely cost much less than $100.
