It has been more than six years since Ford discontinued the Taurus, but the model has now been recalled due to an unexpected safety concern.

Ford is recalling 101,944 Taurus sedans because the B-pillar trim applique may detach.

If the trim becomes loose, it could detach and pose a safety risk for other drivers.

Owners can expect free inspections and repairs from their local dealerships.

While recalls may not be seen in a positive light, they do indicate that an automaker is tackling safety concerns rather than ignoring them. Nevertheless, Ford's total of 112 recalls this year is quite high. The company recently recalled over 1 million vehicles just ten days ago and now has initiated yet another recall, this time for a long-retired sedan.

The Taurus, which was discontinued after the 2019 model year, is being recalled because a trim piece could come loose while driving.

      Loose Trim, Real Danger

The problem revolves around the B-pillar trim applique attached to the front driver and passenger doors. These parts may become loose or fall off completely, creating more than just a visual issue. If they come off, they could end up on the road, posing a danger to other cars.

As noted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, owners might notice the trim peeling when getting in or out of the vehicle. Additionally, some may hear increased wind noise or rattling sounds while driving, which are early indications that the applique is loosening.

This is not a minor recall since it affects 101,944 Taurus units manufactured in the U.S. between July 2016 and March 2019. This includes the 2016, 2017, 2018, and 2019 model years, with the 2019 model marking the end of Ford’s full-size sedan in North America.

      Root Cause in Production

In the recall documents, Ford stated that the detachment issue is attributed to “incomplete adhesion of the part to the door sheet metal during installation.” The problem emerged after a procedure change at the assembly plant eliminated the use of hand rollers that had previously ensured proper bonding of the mounting tapes, which is why Taurus models produced prior to 2016 are not affected.

From 2017 to 2022, Ford recorded 452 warranty claims related to the B-pillar applique. Fortunately, no accidents or injuries have been linked to the defect.

Owners will be notified via mail, but they can also contact Ford directly or visit their local dealership for confirmation. Affected vehicles will undergo inspection, and if necessary, the B-pillar trim applique will be repaired or replaced free of charge.
