The Upcoming Mercedes VLE Might Be The Most Luxurious Minivan Ever In The U.S. | Carscoops

Mercedes is set to introduce two new luxury electric vans, the VLE and its more upscale counterpart, the VLS, featuring cutting-edge technology, roomy interiors, and a driving range exceeding 300 miles.

In anticipation of their global launches later this year, both models are built on the VAN.EA platform, designed with a modular battery-first approach and a flat floor. They will offer configurations with either single or dual motors, producing up to 470 hp and achieving a WLTP range of 311 miles.

Replacing the older EQV MPV, the VLE and VLS are part of Mercedes' new electric van initiative, featuring a fresh EV platform specifically crafted for the company's future fleet.

Several prototypes of the VLE have been spotted undergoing testing in the Arctic, featuring minimal camouflage. Here’s a closer examination of what these models will offer ahead of their official introduction.

      **Electric Elegance**

The design of the VLE, influenced by the somewhat divisive Vision V concept, tones down the dramatic styling while maintaining significant elements. The front retains a distinctive grille panel with tri-DLR headlights, complemented by chrome accents and a sculpted bumper.

From the side, the VLE exhibits a sleek silhouette, with rear quarter glass that slopes down akin to the previously seen Mercedes R-Class. The pronounced shoulder line above the front and rear wheels is designed to mitigate the bulkiness found in many other MPVs.

The rear design incorporates nearly all of the concept's halo-style taillight cluster, while the edges of the tailgate are chamfered for a more three-dimensional look.

      **An Opulent Interior**

The interior of the VLE draws heavily from the Vision V Concept and the EQS, featuring an upright, pillar-to-pillar MBUX Hyperscreen that houses the latest version of Mercedes-Benz's operating system (MB.OS).

Expect the use of sustainable luxury materials, including recycled leather and natural wood veneers. Seating configurations will vary, with the VLE designed to accommodate larger groups with flexible three-row seating. In contrast, the VLS will cater to clients who prefer chauffeur-driven rides, offering individual captain’s chairs, lounge-style seating, and integrated work surfaces.

Notable technology features include Level 2+ driver assistance systems with Level 3 capabilities to follow, augmented-reality navigation, smart ambient lighting, and 4k rear entertainment screens with streaming options. Additional amenities include wireless charging pads, a premium Burmester sound system, and over-the-air software updates.

      **Scalable Architecture**

Both vans are built upon the new modular VAN.EA platform, which includes three main sections—front, center, and rear—to accommodate various vehicle sizes while sharing fundamental components. This architecture emphasizes battery-first packaging, allowing for a flat floor, greater cabin space, and a lower center of gravity.

To enhance maneuverability, the vans will feature rear-axle steering, beneficial for their larger size. The more utilitarian commercial vans from Mercedes will continue utilizing the separate VAN.CA combustion platform.

      **Potent Powertrain**

While final specifications remain to be confirmed, the vans will offer both single and dual-motor configurations. Entry-level models are expected to feature a rear-mounted motor producing approximately 268 hp (200 kW), while the dual-motor, 4MATIC all-wheel-drive versions could reach outputs near 470 hp (350 kW).

Battery capacities are projected to begin around 90 kWh and may exceed 116 kWh for long-range variants, ensuring a WLTP range of over 311 miles (500 km). With an 800-volt electrical system, both models will support a 22 kW AC charger and ultra-fast DC charging capabilities of up to 350 kW. Vehicle-to-grid and bi-directional charging functionalities are also anticipated.

      **Rivals and Reveal**

While the luxury van market isn’t overly saturated, competition is intensifying. Globally, the VLE will compete against offerings like the hybrid Lexus LM, Volvo EM90, and its Chinese counterpart, the Zeekr 009. In the U.S., Volkswagen's ID. Buzz LWB might attract customers considering the VLE due to its playful design.

The official reveal of both the VLE and VLS is anticipated later this year, with plans for launches in North America, Europe, and China slated for early 2026. What do you think about Mercedes' direction with the VLE? Share your opinions in the comments below.
