The enhanced cylinder head and block sub-assemblies are perfect for restoring the Corolla Levin and Trueno.

Toyota GR has begun manufacturing 4A-GE engine components for the classic AE86 series.

These cylinder head and block assemblies incorporate subtle internal upgrades aimed at improving strength and precision.

In addition to the RWD AE86 series, these new parts are also compatible with FWD models.

Interest in maintaining classic cars has been on the rise, prompting Toyota to expand its GR Heritage Parts catalog. Among the latest entries are newly reproduced and slightly upgraded engine components for the well-known AE86 series.

The cylinder head and cylinder block sub-assemblies are meant for the 4A-GE 1.6-liter DOHC 16-valve engine, the core of the Corolla Levin and Sprinter Trueno. Produced from 1983 to 1987, these two models have transformed into cult classics, revered for both their performance and cultural significance.

According to Toyota, the reproduced components maintain the original design and specifications but have been “modernized with the latest simulation technology, manufacturing techniques, and materials”.

      Improvements to the Cylinder Head

Regarding the cylinder head sub-assembly, it features additional machining that reduces the untouched cast surface area, a new coating on the intake ports, and cam cap knock pins. Additionally, certain intake and exhaust surfaces now have thicker walls.

Turning to the cylinder block sub-assembly, a new honing process reportedly enhances manufacturing accuracy. The use of higher-rigid cast iron contributes to increased durability, together with a simulation-based alteration to the crank-cap structure.

Furthermore, aside from its use in the RWD-only AE86 series, the cylinder block sub-assembly is compatible with FWD models, such as the Corolla FX-16 hot hatch, due to additional bosses and ribs that facilitate transverse engine mounting.

Toyota will feature an AE86 build equipped with the reproduced parts at the “Initial D 30th Anniversary 2days” event, scheduled for September 13 and 14 at the Fuji Speedway in Japan. Attendees will have the opportunity to pre-order the new components at the event.

      Expanded Heritage Collection

The new engine parts will be available for sale starting in May 2026, with pricing details to be announced later. Further details on the existing GR Heritage Parts available for the AE86 Trueno and Levin can be found on the official website.

The GR Heritage Parts collection currently includes over 200 components for eight different models, covering various classic Land Cruisers (J40, J60, J70, and J80), the ultra-rare 2000GT, the AE86 series, along with the A70 and A80 generations of the Supra.
