Unlike Mercedes and BMW, Audi does not manufacture any of its vehicles in the United States.

The German automaker is reportedly aiming for annual sales of up to 2 million vehicles. A recent report indicates that Audi is particularly motivated to boost its sales in the U.S. market and is considering establishing a production presence in the country.

In 2023, Audi achieved a significant milestone by delivering 1,895,240 vehicles globally, marking its highest annual sales total ever. However, this record was fleeting as sales dropped by 11.8 percent in the following year. While many might expect Audi to shift focus away from volume after such a dip, a report suggests the brand is gearing up for an even more ambitious growth effort.

An unnamed source told Reuters that the company is aiming for annual sales of at least 2 million vehicles, a goal that reportedly comes from CEO Gernot Doellner. The specific timeline for reaching this target has not been disclosed.

      Short-term goals

For the current year, Audi is reportedly aiming for sales between 1.7 and 1.8 million, which would represent a solid recovery following the weaker results of 2024. The same source noted that the U.S. market is viewed as the most significant growth opportunity for the brand. Audi currently sells about 200,000 cars annually in the U.S., but internal discussions suggest an ambition to nearly double that number.

If Audi can increase its annual sales to 2 million, it would closely follow Mercedes-Benz and BMW, which sold 1,983,400 and 2,200,217 vehicles, respectively, last year.

      Considering domestic production

This growth strategy extends beyond sales targets. Reports indicate that Audi is also evaluating the possibility of manufacturing vehicles in the U.S., which would align it with Mercedes-Benz and BMW, both of whom already have substantial production facilities there. Without local manufacturing, Audi has faced increased vulnerability to trade policies, including tariffs that were introduced during Donald Trump's administration.

The concept of establishing a U.S. factory has reportedly been under consideration for a while, with a decision expected later this year. In addition to serving the American market, such a facility could function as an export hub, producing vehicles for other regions while mitigating exposure to tariffs and supply chain disruptions.
