The New VW T-Roc Advances While America Remains with the Taos | Carscoops
The second-best-selling SUV in VW's lineup now features hybrid capabilities, enhanced styling, and improved technology.
The VW T-Roc has been upgraded in every aspect compared to its predecessor, boasting a larger body with new design elements and a completely redesigned interior. Powertrain options now include gasoline, mild-hybrid, and VW's first full-hybrid system.
Update: Following its public unveiling in Munich, we've included live images of the new VW T-Roc showcasing its features at the event.
Volkswagen's popular model is receiving a significant enhancement. Eight years after the initial launch of the T-Roc, the second generation arrives with a larger size, crisper styling, and a wholly revamped interior. It also marks the introduction of a full-hybrid powertrain for the VW Group, along with updated mild-hybrid options.
The exterior retains the original T-Roc's distinctive character while adopting more modern proportions and a bolder stance. The front design draws inspiration from VW’s electric vehicle lineup, replacing the traditional grille with a sleek appearance highlighted by a full-width LED bar and an illuminated badge. Sporty bumper intakes and a discreet skid plate complete the look.
The side profile remains recognizable, featuring the unique "hockey-stick" line leading into the robust C-pillar, yet with cleaner surfaces and more sculpted fenders for a refreshed look. Buyers can opt for wheels up to 20 inches, and the sloping rear windshield combined with wide LED taillights imparts a coupe-like aesthetic. The redesigned bodywork enhances aerodynamic efficiency by 10%, achieving a drag coefficient of 0.29 cd.
Trim Levels and Dimensions
The new T-Roc will be available in base, Life, Style, and R-Line trims. The sportier R-Line differentiates itself with larger bumper intakes, a rear diffuser, and an optional Black Style package that offers darker exterior accents. Customers can choose from six colors, including Canary Yellow, Flamed Red, and Celestial Blue, with an optional contrasting black roof in certain configurations.
In terms of size, the SUV now measures 4,373 mm (172.1 inches) in length, which is 122 mm longer than the previous version. The wheelbase has been extended by 28 mm (1.1 inches) to 2,631 mm, resulting in a slightly more spacious footprint. This positions the T-Roc neatly between the smaller Taigo and T-Cross and the larger Tiguan and Tayron in VW’s European SUV lineup.
Enhanced Technology and Quality Inside
Volkswagen claims the interior of the new T-Roc now meets the quality benchmarks set by the Tiguan and Tayron. The dashboard replaces the hard plastics found in its predecessor with a fabric finish, and higher-quality materials are evident throughout the cabin, illuminated by ambient lighting shining through perforated leatherette surfaces. Additionally, around 20% of the interior plastics are made from recycled materials, highlighting a focus on sustainability.
At the center of the dashboard is a free-standing infotainment screen available in 10.4 or 12.9 inches, which is supported by a 10-inch digital instrument cluster and an optional head-up display. Although the touch sliders that received criticism remain below the screen, VW has mitigated concerns by including a physical control knob on the center console, borrowed from the Tiguan. This multifunctional knob manages volume, drive modes, and ambient “atmospheres,” thus reducing dependence on touch menus.
Optional features include an ergoActive seat with 14-way electrical adjustments and a massaging function, as well as a Harman Kardon audio system.
The T-Roc has also enhanced its ADAS capabilities. The new version of the Travel Assist system now supports automatic lane changes and has improved predictive speed limit control. There is also a new exit warning system and the Park Assist Pro, which facilitates fully automatic parking over distances up to 50 m (164 feet) with an optional memory function.
Practicality has also improved. Taller occupants benefit from increased cabin space, and cargo capacity has been enhanced to 465 liters (16.4 cubic feet), which is an increase of 20 liters compared to the previous model.
Electrification in Various Forms
Under the hood, the T-Roc is built on the updated MQB Evo platform. The launch lineup features two mild-hybrid versions of the 1.5-liter eTSI engine. The base model generates 114 hp (85 kW / 116 PS) with 220 Nm (162 lb-ft) of torque, while the more powerful variant produces 148 hp (110 kW / 150 PS) and 250 Nm (184 lb-ft). Both engines are paired with a seven-speed DSG transmission and are supported by a 48V system that can briefly provide an additional 19 hp (14 kW).
A significant advancement will be the introduction of VW's first-ever full-hybrid system, a milestone for the company
