Hyundai's electric vehicle sales rose by 72% last month amidst the rush for tax credits.

Sales of the Ioniq 5 increased by 61%, while the Ioniq 6 saw a 30% rise, totaling 1,047 units.

The newly redesigned Palisade also performed well, with sales climbing by 39% to 15,560 units.

Recently, GM reported record electric vehicle sales for August as customers aimed to benefit from the clean vehicle tax credit set to expire on September 30. This trend was mirrored at Hyundai, which saw a 72% year-over-year boost in EV sales.

The Ioniq 5 was the standout performer, with a 61% increase to 7,773 units sold. Even the slower-selling Ioniq 6 benefited from this trend, with a 30% sales increase to 1,047 units. Additionally, the Ioniq 9 found 1,016 buyers.

Excluding EVs, Hyundai Motor America achieved its highest August sales ever with 88,523 units, reflecting a 12% gain compared to the previous year. The company noted that models such as the Elantra N, Elantra Hybrid, Santa Fe Hybrid, the Santa Fe family, Palisade, and Ioniq 5 all reached record sales during August.

The redesigned Palisade was a significant highlight, with sales increasing 39% year-over-year. This three-row crossover starts at $38,935 and features a more angular design alongside a more upscale interior. Standard versions are equipped with a 3.5-liter V6 engine that delivers 287 hp (214 kW / 291 PS) and 260 lb-ft (352 Nm) of torque.

Customers also have the option of a new hybrid starting at $43,660, which offers an eco-friendly powertrain featuring a turbocharged 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine, a 1.65 kWh lithium-ion battery pack, a six-speed automatic transmission, and two electric motors. This configuration provides a combined output of 329 hp (245 kW / 334 PS) and fuel efficiency of up to 34 mpg.

Hyundai Motor North America CEO Randy Parker stated, “This momentum keeps us firmly on track for our best year ever. We’re particularly proud of the record-breaking performance of key models like the Elantra HEV, Palisade, and Ioniq 5, which continue to resonate strongly with customers.” However, it is expected that Ioniq model sales will decline significantly after the tax credit expires, indicating that the outlook may not be as positive as it appears.
