Police utilized a Grappler device to effectively immobilize a stolen Chevrolet, but this resulted in damage that the actual owner may have to pay for.
Approximately eight hours ago, it was reported that a high-tech tool assisted in halting a police pursuit in Michigan without escalating to high speeds. However, this solution was not without cost. The incident ended up damaging the vehicle that police were pursuing for being reportedly stolen.
According to police, they identified a stolen Chevrolet Cruze around 7:25 a.m. on Thursday, August 28, while on I-96. The driver refused to stop, leading officers from Livonia, Michigan, equipped with a Grappler device on their front bumper, to intervene. This device uses a durable strap to secure a rear wheel, effectively bringing a chase to a swift conclusion.
Unfortunately, the suspect continued to resist, ultimately causing the Cruze’s rear subframe to break as he pressed against the strap. As a result, the Grappler held on, ripping the wheels from beneath the vehicle.
Michigan State Police Lt. Mike Shaw commended the outcome, stating that the device enabled officers to apprehend suspects without the risk of a high-speed collision. “We continue to leverage technology to locate and apprehend criminals in our communities,” Shaw stated. “Thanks to the Livonia Police Department and their Grappler device, these suspects are now incarcerated without the need for a pursuit.”
The police reported that the driver faces charges for possession of a stolen vehicle and probation violations. Two other adults in the vehicle had outstanding warrants and were also arrested. Compared to other chases, this one stands out as being particularly safe and efficient.
Regarding the owner, it is important to note that they may face further challenges as their insurance will likely need to cover the damages, since police are typically not held responsible for damages incurred during the recovery of a stolen vehicle. On a positive note, the actions of the officers during the incident highlight that car chases do not have to jeopardize public safety.
