A Mysterious Buyer Has Acquired A Collection Of Extremely Rare McLarens Valued At Several Million Dollars | Carscoops
A legendary 20-car McLaren collection has been quietly sold to a private buyer, prompting speculation among collectors regarding its value and future.
The Magnesium Silver McLaren F1 is among only seven that were officially imported to the U.S. This particular F1 has had its fuel bladders replaced with aluminum tanks, and it features upgrades such as new air conditioning, a sports exhaust, and fresh tires.
Update: Tom Hartley Jnr has achieved what most collectors only aspire to, successfully completing the sale of Mansour Ojjeh’s impressive 20-car McLaren collection. The entire set was purchased by one affluent and discreet buyer, which includes the final McLaren F1 ever produced, several rare Sennas, a P1 GTR, a Speedtail, and other automotive gems that enthusiasts typically only see on posters or social media.
Hartley shared the news on Instagram, referring to it as “one legendary collection, one historic sale.” He explained that while the collection received numerous record-breaking offers for individual vehicles, “both the Ojjeh family and my team were dedicated to keeping this extraordinary collection intact.” Hartley emphasized that this decision was not just about monetary value but also about honoring a remarkable individual, encapsulating a legacy of vision, passion, and automotive excellence.
Although the buyer’s identity and sale price have not been disclosed, the collection is believed to have been sold for a sum in the tens of millions.
The car you see could potentially become the most valuable McLaren F1 ever auctioned. With exceptionally low mileage and a history linked to one of Silicon Valley’s prominent figures, it is estimated to sell for over $23 million in its upcoming sale next month. This anticipated figure reflects how highly regarded the British supercar has become among collectors.
This particular vehicle, finished in Magnesium Silver, was originally delivered to Oracle founder Larry Ellison in August 1997. As one of only seven officially imported to the U.S., it spent over a decade with Ellison, accumulating fewer than 2,600 miles during that period.
The F1 changed hands twice after Ellison, first to a collector in San Francisco and then to the current owner following a 2010 auction, remaining in the Bay Area since then. Its odometer currently shows under 6,500 miles (10,460 km).
Well Maintained and Slightly Upgraded
In 2012, the car was returned to McLaren in the U.K. for servicing, where it received new radiators and an upgraded air conditioning system. It now includes specialized aluminum fuel tanks and a sports exhaust, while still keeping the original owner’s manuals, luggage set, travel suitcase, car cover, service modem/laptop, and torque wrench.
A Pristine F1
RM Sotheby’s is managing the auction and has noted that in October 2023, the car was sent to McLaren Philadelphia, where its transmission was rebuilt, new tires were fitted, and new spark plugs were installed. Minor repairs were also completed on the gold foil in the engine bay. Recently, the windshield was replaced with an original one from McLaren Special Operations.
Given the exemplary maintenance over the decades, it’s perhaps unsurprising that the car appears almost brand new. The exterior and interior are both in pristine condition, maintaining all original materials and parts. However, since the car is being sold through RM Sotheby’s Sealed auction program, the final selling price may remain undisclosed.
Regardless, if you have tens of millions to spend or simply want to admire Ellison’s former F1 as many of us do, check out the listing and imagine you’re bidding from the deck of your yacht.
