Subaru outperformed Mazda and Toyota to secure the top spot in the mainstream category.
A recent study revealed that Subaru and Lexus are the leading brands in terms of customer satisfaction in the mainstream and luxury segments respectively.
Chrysler and Ram were identified as the least satisfying brands in the mainstream arena, while BMW struggled in the luxury sector.
Overall, customers of both mainstream and luxury vehicles expressed lower satisfaction with their car's technology.
The American Customer Satisfaction Index Automobile Study found that American consumers are increasingly dissatisfied with their vehicles, with the overall satisfaction index falling by one point to 79 this year.
Mainstream brands maintained a satisfaction score of 79, whereas luxury brands saw a decline, dropping to 80. The most significant decline was noted among smaller brands – categorized as "others" – which experienced a 9% drop to 74.
Focusing on specifics, Subaru was rated as the most satisfying brand with a score of 85, followed by Mazda and Toyota at 82, while Buick, GMC, and Honda shared third place with a score of 81.
Stellantis had a poor performance with Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep, and Ram all declining. All four brands occupied the bottom positions, with Chrysler and Ram sharing the lowest score of 69.
In the 2025 American Customer Satisfaction Index for mainstream brands, it was noted that most vehicle-related aspects remained largely unchanged. However, there were declines in areas related to technology and safety. The study also introduced two new categories – expected future resale or trade-in value and range on a full charge or tank – and consumer feedback was not very positive, particularly regarding electric vehicles.
On the luxury side, Lexus was ranked highest with a score of 87, followed by Mercedes at 82 and Cadillac and Tesla, which tied for third with a score of 81. BMW finished last with a score of 75, dropping four points from the previous year.
Luxury buyers reported decreased satisfaction across various factors, including driving performance, exterior and interior design, and technology. There were also declines in safety and reliability perceptions.
Beyond the distinction between mainstream and luxury vehicles, satisfaction was notably lower for hybrids and electric vehicles. Hybrids decreased by two points to a score of 80, while electric vehicles fell by four points to 73, in contrast to gas-powered models that remained stable at 80.
The American Customer Satisfaction Index indicated that with 22% of borrowers choosing 84-month loans, there is likely to be a heightened focus on reliability and dependability as consumers keep their vehicles longer. Ram has recognized this trend and has recently introduced a new 10-year/100,000-mile limited powertrain warranty.
