One of the two Ferrari F50s ever produced in this color was sold at auction over the weekend for over $9.2 million.

This particular F50 is one of only two that were factory-painted in Giallo Modena.

Previously, the record for F50 sales was held by a low-mileage model that sold for $5.5 million.

Ralph Lauren owned this specific car for eight years before it was bought by a couple from Virginia.

This car is now recognized as the world’s most expensive Ferrari F50. Over the weekend, it exceeded pre-auction predictions of $6.5 million to $7.5 million, selling for $9.245 million. This sale price is about $4 million higher than most F50s sold in recent years, largely due to its rarity.

The F50 in question was originally ordered by fashion icon Ralph Lauren, who possesses one of the most valuable Ferrari collections globally. This car is one of only 55 made to U.S. specifications and one of only two painted in Giallo Modena from the factory.

Although Lauren rarely sells his cherished cars, he parted with this F50 in 2003, after which it was acquired by a Virginia couple, who have kept it ever since. Before this weekend, it had not been showcased publicly since 2009.

To prepare for the sale, the car was serviced by Ferrari of Central Florida at the end of 2024, receiving a new fuel bladder, tires, and brake components. In 2009, the F50 was also certified by Ferrari Classiche as retaining all of its original parts. It changed ownership with fewer than 5,400 miles (about 8,690 km) on the odometer.

      Reassessing Reputation

Not long ago, the F50 was not regarded as highly as its predecessor, the F40, or its successor, the Enzo. However, in recent years, the demand for pristine, low-mileage F50s has increased, resulting in soaring prices that were once inconceivable.

This trend is perhaps expected, considering that the F50 features a Formula 1-derived naturally aspirated V12, setting it apart in the elite category of supercars.

Before this weekend’s auction, the highest price achieved for an F50 was $5.532 million in February. That vehicle had been driven only 1,351 miles (2,174 km) prior to its sale.
