Simply connect the device to your car’s diagnostic port (virtually every car sold in the U.S. since 1996 has one located in the driver's footwell), link it via Bluetooth to your phone, and the free app allows your car to communicate with you. It works with both iOS and Android; I use it with my iPad for its larger display.

      If you wish to delve deeper into diagnostics, BlueDriver can provide real-time engine data. However, if you only need to ascertain whether your car is at risk of severe damage or if it’s just a minor issue, the app communicates that in straightforward terms as well. Provided you have an internet connection, you can transition directly from trouble-code diagnostics to probable causes and repair suggestions.

      A pro tip for those on a tight budget: Many auto parts stores will read your engine codes at no cost. However, this isn't always practical or convenient.
