The XT5 was anticipated to become obsolete, but it appears that gasoline is hard to let go of.
Cadillac has confirmed its plans to introduce a second-generation XT5 in the U.S.
The revamped model is set to be released in 2027 and may bear similarities to the version available in China.
The U.S. XT5 will be manufactured in Tennessee and could feature a turbocharged 2.5-liter engine.
Cadillac had intended to transition to an all-electric lineup by 2030, which led to the introduction of new models such as the Optiq, Lyriq, Vistiq, Celestiq, and Escalade IQ. While this lineup is impressive, the brand has recognized that the shift to electric vehicles is happening at a slower pace than expected.
A Reducing Gasoline-Powered Lineup
This likely raised concerns as their internal combustion engine lineup is aging and becoming sparse. The XT4 was discontinued earlier this year, and the larger XT6 is also nearing the end of its production. The XT5 was anticipated to follow suit, and its discontinuation would have marked the end of Cadillac’s second-most popular vehicle in the U.S.
However, GM appears reluctant to let it go, as the Detroit Free Press acquired a UAW document indicating that the current XT5 will remain available until late 2026. The crossover will then undergo a redesign for the 2028 model year.
Details remain limited, but there is speculation that we might receive a version of the Chinese crossover introduced last fall. The second-generation model is expected to be larger than its predecessor and feature a design inspired by the Lyriq.
While the Chinese XT5 is equipped with a turbocharged 2.0-liter engine paired with mild hybrid technology, the U.S. variant might align with the Buick Enclave, Chevrolet Traverse, and GMC Acadia. If this is the case, the crossover could utilize a turbocharged 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine producing 328 hp (245 kW / 333 PS) and 326 lb-ft (442 Nm) of torque.
Cadillac Confirms the XT5’s Return
In a statement to MotorTrend, the company said, “In response to strong demand for the nameplate, we decided to retain the XT5 as part of our portfolio, which is now stronger than ever with a mix of new EVs and recently refreshed gasoline-powered vehicles like the Escalade. We look forward to launching the next-generation XT5 in the latter half of 2027.”
