Volkswagen experimented with the concept of an electric coupe influenced by the SP2.
Volkswagen Design representative Stepan Rehak has unveiled an electric sports car concept.
The vehicle was sketched in 2017 as a potential model within the ID. family of electric vehicles.
Inspired by the SP2, the car would have been built on the MEB platform.
While Audi is preparing to showcase the TT successor at the Munich Motor Show, Volkswagen had previously developed its own electric sports car concept. This model drew inspiration from the 1970s SP2 and was intended to be part of the ID. series.
Revealed discreetly by Volkswagen's Stepan Rehak as part of a Blast from the Past series, the sketch from 2017 features a retro-futuristic design that “honors Giugiaro’s legendary style: clean surfaces, strong proportions, and bold graphics.” It was designed to utilize the MEB platform, promising to be a striking addition to the range.
Though Rehak provided limited details about the vehicle, the design includes an SP2-inspired front with a small Volkswagen emblem and slender headlights. It also showcases angular bodywork contrasted by circular wheel arches.
Additional notable features include aerodynamically optimized wheels and a sporty greenhouse, along with flush-mounted door handles, minimalist mirrors, and a wraparound rear light bar.
The SP2 is not well-known, but the sports car was developed by Volkswagen do Brasil and launched in 1972. It was equipped with a 1.7-liter four-cylinder engine that produced approximately 64 hp (48 kW / 65 PS) and 89 lb-ft (121 Nm) of torque, paired with a four-speed manual transmission, which reportedly allowed it to achieve a 0-62 mph (0-100 km/h) time of 15 seconds.
