Good morning and welcome to The Down Shift, or TDS for short.

The Down Shift is The Drive's new weekday early morning brief that highlights the latest news emerging during the overnight and early morning hours. Enjoy it alongside a Pop-Tart and coffee as your day begins.

Today marks the fourth edition of TDS, and your comments and feedback regarding the content and format, whether in the comments section or via email ([email protected]), are greatly appreciated. Please keep sharing your thoughts.

Quick. Compact. Concise. TDS is not meant to be in-depth reporting or a comprehensive feature story. It's designed to provide a quick overview during your early morning routine. Headlines are condensed into one sentence with a link to delve deeper for more details.

After three days, we made a pinky promise that not every TDS would headline or mention Tesla news, and look at that, we're already fulfilling that promise.

I’m now on my second cup of coffee, so let's dive in.

🚘 What I'm driving: Approaching the latter half of the week with the updated 2025.5 Volvo XC90 T8 plug-in hybrid SUV and I've hardly used any gas. Most of my driving has been in all-electric mode, thanks to its 32 miles of electric range.

🔋 Ford CEO Jim Farley announced during the Q2 earnings call that the company will unveil its “breakthrough electric vehicle and platform” in Kentucky on August 11.

💸 In the same call, Farley reported that Ford experienced a Q2 net loss of $36 million, attributing it to rising costs from tariffs and recalls.

🔌 Subaru intends to advance into the future with at least four EVs in its U.S. dealerships despite the loss of federal tax credits.

📈 Hyundai Motor Group, which comprises Hyundai, Kia, and Genesis, hailed the new tariff agreement between the U.S. and South Korea as a “historic achievement,” emphasizing that it will allow the brands to invest in the U.S. “with confidence.”

💶 While Porsche and Aston Martin raise their U.S. prices due to tariffs, BMW stated it will maintain its financial guidance, whereas Ferrari's core profit rose by 6% in Q2.

🏕️ A suitable aftermarket bolt-on winch bumper solution has finally been made available for the Rivian R1T and R1S.
