For now, it seems that the EQ brand's journey in America is coming to an end. Mercedes-Benz has announced that it will halt shipments of its current electric vehicle lineup to U.S. dealerships starting in September, as confirmed to The Drive. The company will still manufacture EQ variants for export to international markets from the U.S., but there are no immediate plans to resume domestic sales.

“A company spokesperson verified that we are pausing U.S. order banks for all EQS Sedan, EQS SUV, EQE Sedan, and EQE SUV variants. However, vehicles slated for production before September 1 will still be delivered.”

On a positive note, Mercedes-Benz intends to maintain production at its U.S. facilities where the EQ models are assembled. The Tuscaloosa, Alabama plant has been producing the EQS SUV and EQE SUV alongside the GLE and GLS models since 2022, and the gasoline models will continue to be available.

“The Mercedes-Benz flexible production system allows us to manufacture electric, hybrid, and combustion-engine vehicles on the same assembly lines, enabling us to adjust our operations to market demand changes,” the spokesperson explained. “We will continue to produce all of our models for global markets.”

Both the EQS Sedan and EQE Sedan are manufactured in Germany (in Sindelfingen and Bremen, respectively), so this allocation change will not affect U.S. facilities.

This situation does not impact the company’s future electrification initiatives. The all-electric CLA is still set to debut in the U.S. next year, according to reports. Only the EQ lineup is affected by this decision.

“The new all-electric CLA, which will be available at U.S. dealerships by late 2025, is the first vehicle based on our new Mercedes Modular Architecture (MMA),” the spokesperson noted. “As revealed at IAA Mobility 2023, Mercedes-Benz will also launch two SUVs based on this new architecture. Additionally, the completely new electric GLC will be showcased at the IAA motor show in Munich on September 7, 2025.”

In the meantime, residents of the U.S. can bid farewell to some of the less memorable exterior designs from the company. Help us, Mercedes Modular Architecture; you’re our only hope!
