Dongfeng is reportedly set to manufacture the M-Hero M817 in both left- and right-hand drive versions, indicating that it may be marketed outside of China.
The M817 features a range-extender powertrain delivering an impressive 912 hp. In China, this rugged 4×4 has a starting price of 329,900 yuan, approximately $46,000. Dongfeng claims the M-Hero M817 can accelerate to 100 km/h (62 mph) in just 4.2 seconds.
While you may not be familiar with the Dongfeng M-Hero M817, this imposing off-road vehicle is already gaining popularity among consumers in China. If there’s a futuristic, electrified 4×4 from China that could potentially succeed in the United States, it could be this one, though it is unlikely to reach American markets.
First unveiled a few months ago, the M817 has been developed through Dongfeng’s collaboration with Huawei and is slightly smaller than the M-Hero 917. Dongfeng recently opened orders for the M817, and within a day, they received 9,713 refundable deposits.
It is worth noting that since these deposits are fully refundable, many might choose not to finalize their purchases. However, the high interest in the vehicle indicates there is a significant demand for robust off-roaders in China, especially at competitive prices like the M817.
The starting price for this model is 329,900 yuan (around $46,000) and goes up to 359,900 yuan (about $50,000). All variants come equipped with the same range-extender powertrain, which includes a 1.5-liter turbocharged engine at the front and dual electric motors. This setup generates an impressive 912 hp and 1,280 Nm of torque, allowing the M817 to reach 100 km/h (62 mph) in just 4.2 seconds, while a large battery enables a range of 200 km (124 miles) on electric power alone.
The distinctive design of the M-Hero M817 is certainly one of its key attractions. In a market where many SUVs resemble each other, the M817 stands out, looking entirely unique compared to other vehicles, except for other M-Hero models.
Although the M817 is unlikely to be sold in the US, there are indications that it will be available in both left- and right-hand drive configurations, suggesting potential sales opportunities in markets outside of China.
