This case highlights the significance of dashcams.

A driver of a Porsche 911 attempted to claim nearly $100,000 in damages following a highway accident in 2022. However, the lawyers withdrew the case once video evidence indicated the claim was misleading. The dashcam footage revealed the driver was hiding behind a sign rather than seated inside the parked vehicle.

What began as a standard roadside incident became a legal quagmire for a Porsche driver in the UK. On August 19, 2022, 33-year-old Terrell Brooks alleged that he sustained injuries when a truck collided with his parked blue 911 Carrera GTS on the A13 motorway's shoulder. However, dashcam footage contradicted his account and swiftly dismantled his case.

Instead of being inside the Porsche during the incident, Brooks was seen crouching behind a large road sign, far away from the driver's seat. The footage, captured by a dashcam in the truck, raised significant questions about his narrative.

      A High-Value Claim Meets a Sudden End

Brooks sought a substantial payout for the incident. He claimed £63,433 (approximately $86,000 at current rates) for damages to his 911, in addition to £5,000 ($6,800) for injuries, £2,400 ($3,200) for medical expenses, and €3,374 ($4,600) for lost wages. He likely believed he could easily profit from AXA UK, the insurer for the truck involved in the collision.

What he may not have foreseen was that the truck had a dashcam. Once the footage was revealed, the resolution was quick. According to the Mirror, his legal team withdrew the case as soon as they viewed the video.

The lawyers acknowledged that Brooks and his passenger had intentionally submitted false statements to the insurer. He then promptly dropped the claim and agreed to pay AXA UK's legal costs amounting to £4,000 ($5,400).

“Mr. Brooks claimed he was inside his Porsche, secured by a seatbelt and injured,” stated Clyde & Co, the law firm representing AXA UK. “The dashcam footage depicted him in the bushes. We still do not know why he was there – but we do know he was not in the vehicle. His story crumbled as soon as the truth emerged. In every regard, the claim was halted abruptly.”

The dashcam footage from the truck has been shared online. It shows the blue 911 parked on the roadside with its hazard lights activated. Although it seems the truck driver had ample time to react to the stopped vehicle, they appeared to dodge the collision only at the last moment. The overall damage to the Carrera GTS is still uncertain.
