VW Alerts Nearly 17,000 Owners to Cease Use of Passenger Seat | Carscoops
Fortunately for VW, not all of the 16,510 vehicles that are being recalled globally have already been delivered to customers.
The affected models include the VW Polo, Passat, Taigo, ID.7, ID.7 Tourer, and ID.Buzz.
VW has reported that a malfunctioning gas generator in the airbag can lead to the airbag housing bursting.
The company is not aware of any injuries or fatalities resulting from the airbag issue.
Airbags are crucial components of a vehicle’s safety system, poised to protect us the moment they are needed. However, when something malfunctions, the consequences can be serious. Just when it appeared that the spree of airbag-related recalls was diminishing, a new concern has arisen involving thousands of Volkswagen vehicles across the globe.
A recent message from the automaker indicates that front passenger airbags "can have a diminished protective effect." Yet, it’s not just this concern that should alarm customers. Volkswagen has stated that in the event of a crash, the airbag housing might burst and potentially strike passengers, which could result in fatal injuries. VW has attributed the problem to a defective gas generator in the airbag.
A total of 16,510 cars are part of the recall. Affected models include the VW Polo, Passat, Taigo, ID.7, ID.7 Tourer, and ID.Buzz, although the specific model years affected have not been confirmed.
Owners will receive notifications about the recall and will be instructed to bring their vehicles to a dealer. The repair process is expected to take between one and three hours. In the meantime, owners are advised not to use the front passenger seats due to the risks posed by the airbag.
Although 16,510 cars are being recalled, not all are currently with customers, as many are still awaiting delivery. These vehicles will undergo repairs before being handed over to buyers.
Another VW Airbag Recall
This isn't the first instance of VW recalling vehicles due to defective airbags. In November 2024, a total of 114,478 cars were recalled in the United States due to Takata airbag inflators that could potentially explode if the propellant deteriorates over time due to prolonged exposure to high temperatures and humidity.
