It's hardly surprising to learn that even law enforcement officers sometimes break the law. While some may do so more frequently than others, this story focuses on Lee County Sheriff Carmine Marceno from Florida, who released a statement earlier this month declaring he has “zero tolerance for street racing” after catching an 18-year-old participating in it. However, the Florida Trident argues that this announcement is misleading, as a video reportedly shows Sheriff Marceno himself engaging in street racing, driving a Corvette in a black Lamborghini Huracan Spyder.

The video is brief, lasting only nine seconds. It was allegedly recorded by Ken Romano, a jeweler from Bonita Springs, who the Trident claims was driving alongside Sheriff Marceno on the six-lane South Tamiami Trail. At the beginning of the clip, the driver of the Corvette can be heard saying, “Yeah, juice that motherf*cker!” in response, the Corvette downshifts and accelerates, reaching 74 mph without overtaking the Lamborghini. The speed limit in that area is 50 mph.

Marceno and Romano have a controversial history that extends beyond this incident. More importantly, Marceno has consistently taken a strong public position against street racing, making multiple posts about it on the Lee County Sheriff’s Office Facebook page this year. The LCSO even shared a video featuring bodycam footage from Operation Street Takeover, during which they conducted 67 traffic stops, issued 74 citations, and made nine arrests.

In another social media post, the sheriff mentioned sending reckless drivers to jail, referring to it as “Motel Marceno.”

“Driving at excessive speeds and endangering yourself, your passengers, and others on the road is an incredibly selfish choice,” Marceno stated in a press release on June 5. “My deputies will continue to patrol the roads of Lee County, ensuring drivers make responsible choices, or they will face repercussions.”

Currently, Marceno is in his second full term as Lee County Sheriff. According to the local News-Press, his salary has risen from $178,000 to $261,000 since 2021. However, there is no confirmation that the Huracan Spyder—which is priced between $200,000 and $260,000 on DuPont Registry—belongs to him.

Locals on social media do not seem surprised by the video. Although it’s unclear when the footage was captured, it was reportedly shared on Facebook as early as September 2024, while the Florida Trident only uploaded it to YouTube last week.

The Drive has contacted the Lee County Sheriff’s Office for comments and will update the story with any responses received.
