BMW has changed its position on range-extended electric vehicles after discontinuing the i3 REx.

The forthcoming iX5 could become the first model to incorporate this type of powertrain, boasting a range of 621 miles.

Range-extended vehicles are becoming increasingly popular in China, with sales increasing by nearly 50 percent.

While several manufacturers misjudged the demand for electric vehicles, BMW appears to have made more accurate assessments, offering a diverse lineup that includes gasoline, diesel, plug-in hybrids, and electric vehicles. Chairman Oliver Zipse recently recognized this achievement, stating the company has “the right products on the market at the right time.”

This strategy has benefited the luxury automaker, as nearly 20% of the vehicles sold are fully electric. However, they also provide many alternatives for customers who prefer not to drive an EV.

More options are on the way, as BMW has confirmed plans to launch a production model featuring a hydrogen fuel cell in 2028. Still, this might not be the only powertrain in development.

In fact, a recent report indicates that a range-extended electric vehicle could debut as soon as 2026. The German publication Automobilwoche mentions that this powertrain will be available in a variant of the iX5, referred to as the iX5 REx, potentially offering a combined range of approximately 621 miles (1,000 km).

Currently, little information is available regarding the powertrain, but it is reportedly being considered for various markets including China, Europe, and North America. BMW has remained silent about the report when approached by Auto News, yet a spokesperson mentioned, “We continuously analyze usage patterns, customer needs, and market developments and review the market potential of various technologies.”

Even though many automakers moved away from range-extended powertrains in their transition toward complete electrification, these types of vehicles are witnessing a resurgence. Ram introduced the 1500 Ramcharger in 2023, and CEO Tim Kuniskis recently expressed that he anticipates other brands will “follow suit.”

This trend appears to be unfolding, as Scout plans to offer a range-extended powertrain, and Ford CEO Jim Farley has recently praised these models. Jeep is also rumored to be developing a range-extended version of the Wagoneer, although there has been little news regarding it following delays with the Ramcharger.
