Mercedes has just released a teaser for a new all-electric AMG model. This short video clip provides both a first look at the brand's plans for its new all-electric platform and an audio preview. If the continuous sound of tire noise confuses you, stick around for the surprise.
There's clearly not much to observe on this still-camouflaged prototype (and if it's computer-generated imagery, it's quite convincing), but its fundamental shape is identifiable. The teaser clearly states that this is built on the company’s new electric architecture, hinting that it will be one of the two models expected to utilize the AMG.EA platform—a sedan or an SUV. We can likely eliminate the latter option here. We also anticipate that this new platform will utilize Benz's latest powertrain technology, featuring more compact batteries and axial flux motors.
Regarding the sound? Where do we begin...
The “engine” sound is quite pleasant, but there's more than just noise—there are also audible “shifts” being simulated. While there are electric vehicles equipped with multi-speed gearboxes, those typically work more like traditional overdrive features rather than the numerous gears found in modern gasoline vehicles. What we’re witnessing here is similar to what you’ll find in the Hyundai Ioniq 5 N, where it serves as an engaging driving feature—and is surprisingly enjoyable, too.
Yet, a question remains: will this be an “exhaust” sound or simply something generated for the interior? The clicks heard with each shift resemble paddle shifters, and why would you need to hear that from outside? Given the mixed reactions to electric vehicles making atypical sounds, Mercedes might be adopting a more cautious approach. This approach would stand in stark contrast to Tesla’s Boombox feature and the ensuing comedic spectacle, and it could be perceived as too artificial to attract the car-buying public who might prefer an EV that sounds like it has a V8 engine.
Regardless, we shouldn't have to wait much longer to find out. This teaser is substantial, so we anticipate an official reveal in the near future.
