Hatchbacks and Sedans Make a Comeback as Kia Takes on SUV Supremacy | Carscoops
Kia is reintroducing hatchbacks and estates in addition to sedans to compete with SUVs, focusing on Europe with new models expected this year.
Kia seeks to draw customers who are not interested in crossovers. The company plans to release more hatchbacks, sedans, and wagons in Europe. The K4 Hatchback will hit US dealerships later this year.
In an era dominated by crossovers and SUVs, it’s easy to overlook that not everyone prefers driving a high-riding vehicle with uncertain handling and a lack of identity. Thankfully, Kia hasn't lost sight of this. Amid the ongoing SUV trend, the brand acknowledges that there remains a dedicated customer base for hatchbacks, sedans, and wagons, and it is preparing to expand its offerings.
Kia is particularly hopeful about these models in Europe, where the demand remains robust, as recently reported to Autocar magazine. With many automakers filling their lineups with bulky utility vehicles, this return to a broader range of options is indeed refreshing.
One of Kia’s upcoming models is the EV4. This will mark the first time Kia’s battery-electric vehicle will be available as both a hatchback and a sedan. Unfortunately for the US market, the EV4 will only be offered as a sedan, whereas some markets will get both body styles.
Additionally, the new Kia K4 is expected to achieve higher sales than the EV4. Launched last year as a sedan, the K4 family has recently added a hatchback variant. Although it resembles an estate more than a conventional hatch, this addition should significantly enhance the model's appeal. Kia is also working on a genuine K4 estate, set to arrive later this year.
Strong Demand in Europe, But Competition Grows
During a conversation with Autocar, Kia executive vice president Ted Lee emphasized the significant potential for hatchbacks in Europe. While he highlighted Kia’s strong presence in the region, he also recognized the increasing competition, especially from emerging Chinese brands that are making the landscape "more challenging." He noted, "We need to strengthen Kia's advantages in the market."
The new Kia K4 Hatchback is scheduled to arrive in US dealerships later this year. While pricing information hasn't been disclosed yet, it will likely be priced slightly lower than the sedan, which starts at $21,990 and goes up to $28,090.
