Camping can be a delightful experience when you know what you're doing. However, if you're not prepared, it can turn into a logistical headache. Thankfully, video games provide a quick escape from that stress, allowing you to dive straight into the enjoyment of creating your ideal camper, and that’s precisely the concept behind Camper Van: Make It Home. We’re excited to share that it just launched for PC on Steam on June 8.
This indie game comes from a small team of eight at Malapata Studio, based in Spain. It was initially funded through Kickstarter two years ago, and now it’s live, accompanied by a demo that gives a glimpse of the gameplay. At its essence, this is a creative puzzle game where you’ll arrange and embellish your mobile home, paying attention to details like pantry items and potted flowers. As you fill your scrapbook with discoveries, you’ll uncover more about the protagonist’s background through actions and objects rather than dialogue. You won’t be alone on this journey; you’ll have a four-legged (or scaled) travel companion who can be petted.
The game features a soothing pastel, cel-shaded art style that enhances the experience as you organize dishes in cupboards, personalize your van’s interior, and set up camping chairs and board games outside. I played the demo for around 15 minutes, and while it was somewhat challenging to define where the demo concludes and the full game begins, the charm was immediately evident. If you like to rearrange your furniture occasionally but are constrained by time, finances, or energy (or maybe all three), this game is ideal for you. It’s also perfect if you dream of traveling around the country in a cozy van with a furry or scaled companion.
The game includes a photo mode, and you can even stock the fridge! You get to place each item as the player. Steam, The Drive
Camper Van can run on nearly any device—the minimum specs state you need a GTX 660 graphics card and an Intel Core i3 processor—but a Nintendo Switch version (and likely Switch 2) is in development. This seems fitting since it’s a game that’s perfect for playing on a tablet, if not with a mouse. Moreover, with a Switch, you could take it along on your next real-life road trip.
While not present in the demo, you are not limited to just customizing vans. Steam, The Drive
