A man rented an Aston Martin Vantage through Turo and extended his rental duration.
On May 30, the police report that he led them on a high-speed chase before crashing into a pole.
Officers discovered him alive at the scene; however, he later passed away while in custody.
A police pursuit late at night in Los Angeles ended in tragedy, confusion, and a damaged British sports car. What began as an ordinary car rental quickly devolved into a series of peculiar events, leaving many unanswered questions about what truly occurred that night.
A man rented an Aston Martin Vantage from Turo. Previously the head of an exotic car rental business, he appeared to be very satisfied with the vehicle. Days later, he wrecked the car during a police chase, and then he died before officers could apprehend him or understand why he fled in the first place.
A Brief Chase, a Sudden Collision
The driver, identified as 30-year-old Martin Soria, was reportedly clocked speeding around 3 a.m. on Friday night. Authorities attempted to pull him over, but he allegedly fled, prompting officers to call off the chase due to safety concerns. Nevertheless, Soria crashed the rented Aston Martin into a pole at the intersection of Soto St. and Washington Blvd. What occurred next is particularly perplexing.
According to officers, while Soria died at the scene, it was not a direct result of the collision. “A small amount of force was used,” stated Highway Patrol Sgt. Dan Keene to reporters. “When the fire department arrived, the driver began to show signs of distress and started to vomit. It’s unclear if he ingested something or if impairment played a role at this point.”
Currently, authorities suspect that Soria may have experienced a cardiac event that caused his death, but they are continuing their investigation.
The owner of the Aston Martin apparently had a good rapport with Soria, even if brief. “[He] seemed super chill. I was talking to him throughout the entire rental period. He was messaging me, washing the vehicle, and stating he would take good care of it,” Juan Orozco, the owner of the sports car, told NBC LA.
Soria seemed to have intentions for the Aston Martin. He extended the rental period by eight days from the original agreement and ultimately wanted to keep it for a month. At this point, it is hoped that officers can determine what led to the chase, the crash, and Soria’s tragic death.
