Kia Only Sold 37 EV9s in May, Yet a Gas Sedan is Thriving | Carscoops
Kia's all-electric flagship SUV, the EV9, experienced a significant sales decline in May, dropping 98.3 percent to only 37 units sold.
Sales for both the EV9 and the EV6 fell sharply in May, continuing a downward trajectory for the year. In contrast, K5 sedan sales soared by 256 percent last month, reflecting a 220 percent increase year-to-date. Overall, Kia's total sales rose by 5 percent in May and are up 10 percent since the beginning of the year.
The latest sales figures from Kia illustrate that not all gains in the auto industry follow a linear narrative. The company recorded a solid May, selling 5 percent more vehicles compared to the same month last year, but this overall figure does not capture the entire picture.
While the flagship electric models faced challenges, the K5 experienced an impressive sales increase of 256 percent month-over-month. Kia is not alone in facing a slowdown in electric vehicle sales.
It is noteworthy that the K5 has been on the market for several years, and its significant boost in sales during May doesn’t appear to be an anomaly. Year-to-date, it is up by 220 percent. In raw sales figures, only 9,036 units were sold through May last year, whereas this year, sales have reached 28,951. Together with the K4, Kia has already surpassed 90,000 total sales this year.
Electric Models Experience Decline
Undoubtedly, the company would prefer its flagship electric vehicles to experience similar success. The updated EV6 is enjoyable to drive, yet it has not been as popular with buyers this year, down 40.8 percent in the first five months. The EV9, Kia’s premier electric SUV, is faring even worse, with a 48.2 percent drop during the same period.
This trend shows no signs of reversing. In May alone, the EV6 sales were down 69.8 percent, and the EV9 sold merely 37 units nationwide, resulting in a staggering 98.3 percent decline for that month. It will be interesting to observe Kia’s strategies to attract buyers as new model year versions arrive at dealerships. Both models are impressive, but consumers appear to be increasingly favoring hybrids.
Kia’s shift away from EVs toward combustion vehicles is not a trend exclusive to the brand; Ford recently shared similar May sales figures, indicating a comparable trend. While the Mustang Mach-E continues to perform well, the F-150 Lightning and E-Transit have seen noticeable declines compared to last year.
