A New Model Is Set to Take the Place of Mazda's Outdated Small SUV | Carscoops

Mazda is working on a new subcompact crossover expected to launch under the CX-20 nameplate.

The CX-20 is set to replace the aging CX-3, featuring a more modern design and enhanced interior space.

This SUV will utilize an electrified platform, offering mild-hybrid inline-four engine options.

The interior is anticipated to be upscale, with more technology and space compared to the outgoing model.

After over ten years in Mazda’s entry-level segment, the small CX-3 is finally being phased out. Recent trademark filings and comments from company executives indicate that its replacement, likely named the CX-20, is already well into development. Positioned just below the CX-30, the CX-20 seems poised to maintain Mazda’s commitment to stylish, driver-oriented crossovers.

At a recent Mazda event in Thailand, executives provided some insights into the upcoming model, backed by early design sketches. While the final product might take some time to reveal, here's what we know about the CX-20 so far.

      Kodo Curves

The CX-20 appears ready to adopt the newest iteration of Mazda’s Kodo design language, resembling elements seen in the larger CX-60 and CX-90. Sketches unveiled during the Thailand event depict a compact SUV with sleek, flowing lines and a sporty, low profile. The front design hints at a wider and bolder grille flanked by slim LED headlights and vertically arranged daytime running lights, features seemingly inspired by the next-generation CX-5.

The overall stance appears sporty and streamlined. Side views of the CX-20 suggest a coupe-like roofline that slopes toward the rear, lending it a youthful appearance. Mazda’s concept drawings even hint at a contrasting black roof and distinctive circular tail light designs. While sketch details can be exaggerated, it’s clear that the CX-20 is destined to be visually striking.

      A Nicer Interior

Although no interior images of the CX-20 have emerged, the cabin is likely to be more upscale and technologically advanced than that of the outgoing CX-3. Mazda is known for its high-quality interiors that exceed expectations, indicating that the CX-20 will include premium materials and a sleek, minimalist aesthetic.

Interior space is also expected to improve compared to the CX-3, which frequently faced criticism for its cramped rear seating and limited cargo capacity. In terms of technology, anticipate a digital instrument cluster and Mazda’s latest infotainment system. However, it remains unclear if the rotary dial will be retained, as recent models in China have transitioned to an all-touchscreen interface.

      Under The Skin

Mazda has invested $150 million in its Thai production facility, aiming to create a new generation of electrified compact SUVs. This suggests that the CX-20 will be built on a platform designed with hybrid powertrains in mind. According to the brand's electrification roadmap, the model is expected to use a mild-hybrid system paired with an inline-four engine, likely available in 1.5- or 2.0-liter variants.

Like the CX-3, the CX-20 will follow a front-wheel-drive layout, with all-wheel drive potentially offered as an option. A plug-in hybrid version has yet to be confirmed, but remains a possibility for the future.

      Rivals and Reveal

This segment is fiercely competitive, as the CX-20 will face strong competition from models by Hyundai, Honda, Kia, Toyota, and Ford, including the Kona, HR-V, Stonic, Yaris Cross, and Puma.

While Mazda has not yet announced the debut date for the CX-3’s successor, indications suggest that it will be revealed within the next 18 months. The new crossover will primarily focus on Asia-Pacific markets, though it may also reach other regions in the future.

Whether Mazda will introduce the CX-20 to the US remains uncertain. We’d love to hear your thoughts on this. Please share your opinions in the comments.
