A teenager has been detained for allegedly breaking into 121 cars within a single night.
Authorities discovered stolen items, a multitude of credit cards, and keys belonging to numerous vehicles.
Despite the extensive nature of the crime spree, the teen was released after only five hours in custody.
A 16-year-old has been apprehended by police in Maryland after allegedly breaking into 121 vehicles in just one night, which is an astonishing figure. He now faces a considerable list of charges.
The investigation is ongoing, but the Laurel Police Department reported that the spree began on May 4, affecting their city and nearby areas. Eventually, authorities identified the suspect and executed a search warrant at his home in Beltsville on May 28.
Police noted that the teen had several credit cards and the key to a stolen vehicle used during the crime spree. Additionally, authorities found "keys to 25 other vehicles and various stolen items." They are currently working to identify the owners of the stolen property and return it to them.
The teen was placed in custody and will face charges of motor vehicle theft along with multiple counts of theft from a vehicle. Authorities also mentioned that two of his accomplices have been identified and are expected to be arrested.

Regrettably, it seems their consequences will be minimal. At a press conference, Laurel Police Chief Russ Hamill stated that the teen spent only five hours in custody before being ordered to be released by the Maryland Department of Juvenile Services.
Police expressed their concerns, but officials argued that the teen had no prior criminal record, did not engage in violent crime, and was not considered a flight risk. This has understandably upset many, given that the teen allegedly committed at least 121 crimes in a single night. As Hamill pointed out, that is quite a significant criminal record.
