Mercedes-AMG’s forthcoming flagship electric vehicle has shed much of its camouflage in its latest testing phase.

The star-shaped daytime running lights (DRLs) are now clearly visible, and the grille area appears extremely slim.

However, the front fenders do not feature the prominent peaks that were showcased in the 2022 Mercedes Vision AMG Concept.

Earlier this month, AMG released a series of teaser images for its new electric sedan, marking the beginning of the countdown toward a full reveal later this year. There’s much to be excited about regarding the still-unnamed four-door, including the new AMG.EA platform and axial flux electric motors produced by Yasa in the UK, which are expected to deliver over 1,000 horsepower.

Each motor is quite powerful, generating around 480 horsepower and 590 lb-ft (800Nm) of torque, which is impressive considering their compact size of just 53 lbs (24kg). With the potential for up to three motors, envisioning a performance version exceeding 1,000 horsepower isn’t far-fetched.

A Detailed Look at the Exterior

Now, we have something even more exciting than speculative numbers: fresh spy photos. For the first time, we can see the EV bathed in daylight without its bulky camouflage. Does the design live up to the promise of those figures? To some extent.

While this prototype is still completely disguised in distracting camouflage, we can finally make out the contours of the front fenders, hood, and headlights, and I can’t help but feel somewhat let down. Mercedes has a history of making lofty promises with concept cars that don’t always translate to their production versions—consider the stunning Vision EQS compared to the more mundane EQS—and this electric vehicle appears to follow suit.

The prototype lacks the alluring peaked fenders of the 2022 Mercedes Vision AMG Concept, which paved the way for this year’s competitor to the Porsche Taycan. Instead, it features a relatively flat hood that at least slopes down toward the road, creating a sportily narrow grille area.

While it has DRLs shaped like the Mercedes star, they seem to be integrated into standard light units rather than being seamlessly embedded into the bodywork as seen in the concept. Although the Porsche Taycan differs from the original Mission E concept, the changes were so subtle that no one felt cheated. AMG enthusiasts might not feel the same way this time.

Of course, we should reserve our final assessment until the camouflage is fully removed, and we truly hope the final product will impress. What’s your take? Do you believe AMG has squandered an opportunity to stand out in a new market, or do you think this EV will pose a significant challenge to the Porsche Taycan?
