Toyota is clearly facing challenges in selling the hydrogen-electric Mirai. Although it’s an innovative vehicle with a more appealing design than its predecessor, hydrogen technology is still far from becoming mainstream. As a result, the automaker is offering an impressive rebate on the 2025 Mirai, which has undergone some minor updates, yet the incentives target a very specific audience.
The rebate for the 2025 Mirai isn't as compelling as those for the 2024 model, but significant savings are still available. Documents sent by Toyota to its dealers and discovered by CarsDirect reveal $25,000 in Financing Subvention Cash for buyers who finance a 2025 Mirai. Financing the vehicle is a straightforward choice, as Toyota provides 0% APR for 72 months. However, the $25,000 rebate is not applicable for those leasing a Mirai; instead, Toyota offers $7,500 in lease cash to enhance the appeal of this niche vehicle.
The starting price for the 2025 Mirai is $52,930, including destination charges for the XLE model, which is now the only available trim after discontinuing the upscale Limited variant. With the $25,000 rebate factored in, you can acquire a new Mirai for just $27,930. That’s quite a bargain; purchasing a new Forester, even in its base version, would cost you more. It’s even less expensive than a new Nissan Leaf. Alternatively, the savings from claiming the Financing Subvention Cash could buy you a brand-new Corolla hatchback.
As with any promotion, there are terms and conditions that apply. This offer is valid from May 1 to June 2, according to CarsDirect, and is only available to buyers in California.
However, the main drawback is the practicality of owning a Mirai. It’s comfortable, well-constructed, and stylish, but refueling can be a challenge. There are only 53 public hydrogen refueling stations in the United States, with all but one located in California (the other is in Hawaii). This may not be a significant issue if you reside in Los Angeles and require a commuting vehicle. However, it becomes problematic if you live in Los Angeles and plan a long weekend trip to Moab, Utah. We also do not recommend attempting to produce hydrogen yourself.
