Tesla Introduces $2K Upgrade That Instantly Enhances Your Model Y Juniper's Speed | Carscoops
Tesla has introduced a new over-the-air software upgrade called "Acceleration Boost" for Model Y owners.
This upgrade increases horsepower by approximately 100, making the Model Y faster than its competitors.
The Acceleration Boost serves as a temporary solution until the release of the future Model Y Performance.
Tesla is utilizing its over-the-air capabilities to introduce this new feature. Known as Acceleration Boost, the $2,000 upgrade can be accessed through the Tesla app and provides an additional power boost for the updated Model Y ‘Juniper’. This enhancement reduces the 0-60 mph acceleration time (with rollout) from 4.6 seconds to 4.2 seconds. This option was also available for the previous Model Y and was standard on the new Launch Edition.
This is a significant enhancement, even if it's just under half a second. Drivers are likely to notice the difference, particularly during highway merges or aggressive driving. The upgrade adds around 100 horsepower, as noted by Tesla enthusiast Matthew Donegan-Ryan. The performance change makes the Model Y considerably quicker compared to rivals like the Volvo EX40, and significantly faster than models such as the Nissan Ariya Nismo.
In related news, Tesla sales in Sweden have seen a dramatic drop of over 80%, and this might be just the beginning.
This upgrade comes as Tesla expands the availability of the new Model Y following the limited Launch Series run. Currently, U.S. buyers can only opt for the Long Range AWD version, while previous versions like the Rear-Wheel Drive and Performance trims are currently unavailable. This leaves speed-seeking customers with limited choices for the time being.
Tesla's $2,000 Speed Boost is a familiar strategy, similar to approaches taken by other automakers facing comparable situations. The company has long capitalized on untapped performance through software upgrades, allowing customers to unlock additional performance or range after initial purchase. This option was also available for the older Model Y, and the upgrade uptake is believed to be quite high.
However, this offering may be viewed as more of a temporary solution: a digital stopgap between the Long Range AWD and the upcoming Model Y Performance. It also serves as a strategy to accelerate Model Y sales during a time when Tesla needs every sale it can secure.
BREAKING: @Tesla has launched the “Acceleration Boost” paid software upgrade for the refreshed 2026 Model Y (Juniper). It adds around 100hp and decreases the 0-60 time from 4.6 seconds to 4.2 seconds.
