I have always admired the craftsmanship involved in ultra high-end hot rods, such as the Porsches from Singer or the vintage Land Cruisers restored by Icon 4×4. However, I find myself more impressed by those who create intriguing builds on a limited budget and in modest workshops. Take my friend Tom, for instance—he was swapping a Porsche engine for a Honda one in the back corner of a shop parking lot, outdoors, in February, in New Jersey. He is currently doing an excellent job documenting his project and its challenges for our entertainment on The Drive‘s YouTube channel.
I met Tom about 18 months ago while we were capturing rolling shots of a Lamborghini Huracan Sterrato along the New York-New Jersey border. I was quickly drawn to his laid-back confidence and his readiness to hang off the back of my BMW to get the shots he needed. I thought to myself, “This guy’s a bit of a gangster,” as he handled our makeshift camera setup. Now, I find myself thinking the same thing as I watch Tom shoveling snow and working on the engine outdoors.
As you’ll see in the introductory video of this new series, Tom was the primary person behind the CARISMA video series we produced over the last couple of years. He discovered some fascinating builds and did an amazing job showcasing the individuals behind them. (If you haven't seen it, check it out!) Now, he’s taking on a build of his own, and we felt it was only right to allow him to narrate the story of how he’s fitting a Honda K-Series engine into his Porsche 944 after its original engine failed.
We are striving to ensure that these videos appeal to both car enthusiasts and casual viewers. While don’t expect a detailed how-to guide, if you’ve never swapped an engine yourself, you might pick up a tip or two by following along on this journey.
The first substantial update is already available, and another episode will be released this week. You know the drill: Watch, like, subscribe, and share these videos if you enjoy what you see!
I’m excited to feature more grassroots-level repair work on our YouTube channel and homepage. This is the type of content that motivates me to get up and start addressing the 99 issues my own fleet of project cars has. If Tom can tackle it in a chilly back lot, I’ve run out of excuses with my two-bay heated garage!
