BMW has introduced its latest entry-level customer racing vehicle, the M2 Racing. In development since 2023, this successor to the M2 CS Racing will be available globally in time for the 2026 motorsports season.
“At BMW M Motorsport, our main goal is to support customer racing with vehicles that are easy to maintain, cost-effective, and exhilarating to drive,” said BMW M CEO Franciscus van Meel in a press release. “The launch of the BMW M2 Racing allows us to continue this proud tradition. The car is budget-friendly while providing racing teams and drivers with exceptional performance, durability, and pure driving enjoyment.”
The new BMW M2 Racing mirrors the 2 Series racing lineage of the M235i Racing, M240i Racing, and M2 CS Racing predecessors. Built on an M2 chassis, the race variant retains the standard vehicle's steering wheel, center console, and iDrive screen but incorporates a roll cage, specialized tuning, and racing-specific components. Optional features include a rear wing, a Sabelt GT-PRO carbon fiber driver seat, and data logging software.

The M2 Racing is powered by a B48 series turbocharged four-cylinder engine paired with a 7-speed ZF automatic transmission, generating 313 horsepower and 420 Nm (309 pound-feet) of torque. Its maximum speed reaches 270 km/h (approximately 168 mph). Additionally, it weighs just 1,498 kg (~3,300 pounds).
Beyond its track-ready power and components, the testing phase for the M2 Racing involved three distinct vehicles concentrated on powertrain, dynamics, and endurance. How extensive was the development? The enduro model alone completed 30,000 km (18,641 miles) of testing.
Designed for various motorsport applications, including personal track days, cup series, and endurance racing, the M2 Racing will be made available to customers worldwide. Sales will commence this June, with distribution through select BMW M Motorsport dealers. The starting price for the base racing model is 98,000 Euros ($111,414 at current currency exchange). While it's a significant investment, it appears to offer solid value for a factory-tuned racing car.
