Geely is working on a robust SUV aimed at competing with the Land Cruiser and Land Rover Defender.

The Galaxy Battleship combines a boxy off-road aesthetic with AI-enhanced four-wheel-drive technology.

The electrified SUV has been showcased in prototype form, with a production version anticipated.

The SUV market is populated by recognizable models dressed in new styles, and few have influenced as many redesigns as the Land Rover Defender. In recent years, it has served as a blueprint for numerous SUVs, particularly in China, where manufacturers consistently draw inspiration from its versatile, boxy design. The latest imitation comes from Geely, which unveiled its tech-centric off-roader, the Galaxy Battleship, featuring an electrified drive system, in prototype at the Shanghai Auto Show.

Geely refers to it officially as the “Galaxy Cruiser,” but its Chinese name translates to “Galaxy Battleship,” which certainly has a more distinctive touch. The company states that the design combines “Eastern aesthetics” with “Chinese elements,” even though the visual resemblances to the Land Rover Defender are quite apparent. Standout features include round LED headlights, side-mounted accessories, and a robust front bumper with familiar dimensions.

      Design Influences, Inside and Out

From the side, the Galaxy Battleship adopts the increasingly popular design of softened-box SUVs that are prevalent in the Chinese market. It visually aligns with other competitors such as the BYD Fangchengbao Bao 5 and models from BAIC, Haval, and Chery Jetour. The rear design features upright taillights reminiscent of Volvo, along with a roof spoiler and an external spare tire.

Geely has not disclosed specific dimensions yet, but the Galaxy Battleship seems to fall within a size range similar to the Toyota Land Cruiser Prado, indicating a substantial mid-to-large footprint suitable for serious off-road usage.

      Interior Technology Meets Camping Convenience

Inside, you’ll encounter a freestanding infotainment screen paired with a distinct set of digital gauges on the passenger side, referred to as the “exploration kit.” The floating center console features what Geely describes as the “off-road control island,” a yacht-inspired hub for terrain-specific functions.

The multi-functional tailgate includes built-in storage compartments, and the spacious bed that unfolds inside the cabin makes the Geely Galaxy Battleship a perfect partner for camping excursions. Additionally, Geely’s Satellite Network ensures the SUV stays connected even in remote locations.

      AI Technology for Off-Roading

Geely has not provided detailed information about the Galaxy Battleship’s electrified powertrain, but it has indicated that the SUV utilizes an AI-assisted system to toggle between electric, hybrid, and range-extender modes. This system also automatically adjusts to varying terrains and driving conditions.

The intelligent four-wheel-drive system continuously modifies torque distribution to each wheel for maximum traction. Consequently, the Galaxy Battleship is capable of performing advanced maneuvers, including crab-walking, 360-degree spins, drifting, and even driving with a flat tire.

For off-road activities that involve water, or perhaps a gentle river cruise, Geely claims the Galaxy Battleship can float for up to two hours, achieving speeds over 8.5 km/h (4.6 knots) when operating as a boat. It also includes a wading radar and sonar to enhance safety during river crossings. Back on solid ground, the company asserts that the SUV successfully completed the moose test at a record speed of 80 km/h (50 mph), although this figure has not been independently verified.

The battery capacity and electric range remain unclear, but the vehicle is equipped with Geely’s Golden Short Blade Battery. The company asserts it has a bulletproof coating and materials designed to withstand deformation, fire, and explosions.

Regarding availability, Geely has yet to announce a production timeline. The Galaxy Battleship is expected to launch in China first, with the possibility of entering select international markets afterward.
