Buick has revealed plans for a new Electra sub-brand and the Xiao Yao platform aimed at the Chinese market.
The company has also provided a glimpse of three forthcoming Electra models, which will include a sedan, a crossover, and a van.
This platform is designed to be highly adaptable, accommodating electric, plug-in hybrid, and range-extended powertrains.
Buick utilized their Chinese brand day to introduce the Electra sub-brand dedicated to premium new energy vehicles, in addition to their next-generation architecture, termed Xiao Yao. This architecture will serve as the foundation for six models over the next year.
The platform was specifically designed for the Chinese market and offers significant flexibility, capable of supporting various types of vehicles including sedans, minivans, and SUVs, with options for front-, rear-, or all-wheel drive.
Moreover, the adaptability extends to powertrains, making it suitable for plug-in hybrids, battery electric vehicles, and extended-range models. Regarding electric vehicles, Buick has teamed up with CATL to develop a Lithium Iron Phosphate battery that features a 640 kW ultra-fast charging ability, enabling a rapid 10-minute charge to provide 217 miles (350 km) of range.
Additional technological advancements are anticipated, as Buick partners with Momenta to implement a Level 2 “urban driver assistance technology” beginning in 2025. The company also promises cutting-edge features powered by a Qualcomm 8775 chip, which will support a 50-inch augmented reality head-up display, eight interior screens, and artificial intelligence capabilities.
Moreover, customers can anticipate numerous comfort features, including multi-position zero-gravity seats, complemented by a 5-Constant comfort system that focuses on temperature, humidity, oxygen levels, air purity, and noise reduction.
While Buick has not disclosed extensive details about the Electra brand, it assures a blend of “global legacy with local innovation.” The company indicated that a sedan and SUV will be among the offerings, alongside a flagship MPV called the Encasa.
The Encasa will be available with both plug-in hybrid and electric powertrains. Details surrounding this model remain scarce, but it aims to “enhance Buick’s long-standing leadership in China’s MPV market, rounding out the brand’s MPV lineup across mainstream, premium, and luxury segments.”
Although the company has been tight-lipped about the upcoming vehicles, they did unveil three stylish concepts featuring a prominent shark nose front and distinctive headlights. These designs are complemented by a roof-mounted sensor, large wheels, and flush door handles.
While specifics are limited, Buick indicated an output capability of up to 443 hp (330 kW / 449 PS), which is considerable compared to the US-spec Enclave, which tops out at 328 hp (245 kW / 333 PS).
