      Professional truck drivers are quite different from the average person—assuming you’re not one of them, of course. The drivers I know take immense pride in their work more than any other civilian could. I think it’s safe to include Homero Flores in this group, as the 33-year HEB driver has just reached an incredible milestone of 4 million incident-free miles on a trip to Corpus Christi, Texas.

      That’s a significant amount of time spent driving professionally and an impressive number of miles driven. It’s even more astonishing when you consider that equates to about 357 miles a day, every single day, with no breaks. The fact that his daily average is even higher is remarkable, given that Flores likely didn’t work every day of the week throughout those years. However, it seems he would have if HEB had requested it.

      “You have to admire and respect Homer’s remarkable achievement,” stated Todd Wright, senior vice president of transportation at HEB. “It seems almost unthinkable when you reflect on it. Day after day, he is transporting up to 80,000 pounds with a 53- or 57-foot trailer among other vehicles on the road. To accomplish this while traveling four million consecutive safe miles, without a single dent or broken mirror, speaks volumes about his professionalism.”

      Flores began his journey at HEB in 1986 and enrolled in truck driving school in 1989. He was driving full-time by 1992. He reached his first million miles by December 2000 in just eight years, followed by two million miles in another eight years, and three million miles in eight more… you get the idea. This individual epitomizes consistency.

      It’s almost hard to believe that Flores is the third HEB driver to reach 4 million safe miles. Andres Corona and Danny Guerrero Jr. accomplished this before him in 2014 and 2021, respectively. This illustrates how seriously the company’s drivers take their roles—and highlights the vast distances they cover when delivering goods throughout the South.
