Cars have been getting larger, and consumers are increasingly favoring trucks and SUVs.
This trend has made garage parking more challenging, particularly in older homes.
Do you prioritize parking in a garage, or are you okay with leaving your vehicle outside?
The standard two-car garage measures 18 feet (5.5 m) in width and 20 feet (6.1 m) in depth, but cars have been steadily increasing in size for decades. Additionally, consumer tastes have shifted towards larger vehicles like trucks and SUVs, which surpass the dimensions of sedans.
For instance, take the 2026 Cadillac Escalade IQL, which is an enormous 228.5 inches (5,803 mm) in length—over 19 feet (5.8 meters). Fitting it into a garage could pose challenges for many, especially with larger models like the 2025 Ram 2500 that can reach up to 260.8 inches (6,626 mm) in length.

That leads us to today’s question: would you purchase a vehicle that cannot fit in your garage? I recently faced this dilemma while looking to replace my daily driver and considering several three-row crossovers.
While they would fit in my garage in terms of length, the width posed an issue unless I made significant changes or parked another vehicle outside. This factor became a deal breaker for me, despite my current practice of leaving a truck in the driveway.
This question is particularly relevant in the age of electric vehicles, as it is ideal to charge them at home. Garages naturally serve this purpose, but some homeowners opt to install charging stations outside, which typically incurs higher costs.
Parking in a garage also protects your vehicle from the elements, providing convenience as you enter and exit. It’s much more pleasant to get into a car that’s a bit warmer in the winter or cooler in the summer.
