UAW Leader Receives $275K Salary as Union's Financial Deficit Worsens | Carscoops

      Last year, each of the UAW’s three Vice Presidents had a salary of $211,001.

      UAW President Shawn Fain reported a gross salary of $229,514 for the past year, but he is not the only union executive with a significant salary. A recent filing with the U.S. Labor Department disclosed not only the compensation for top executives but also new insights into membership figures and the financial status of the union.

      Given that former UAW president Gary Jones admitted to using union funds for personal expenses and received a 28-month prison sentence in 2021, it is understandable that members are closely monitoring executive compensation. In Fain's situation, while his gross salary was $229,514, the total disbursements from the union, including business-related expenses, amounted to $274,407 in 2024.

      The next highest earner in the UAW was Secretary-Treasurer Margaret Mock, with a salary of $224,861 and total payments of $247,169. Vice Presidents Mike Booth, Rich Boyer, and Chuck Browning all received the same gross salary of $211,001, while Kevin Gotinsky, who leads the union's Stellantis department, had a total salary of $177,942.

      According to the Detroit Free Press, UAW membership rose from 370,239 in 2023 to 375,161 in 2024, aided by the successful unionization of the VW plant in Chattanooga, Tennessee, although this figure is a decline from the 383,003 members recorded in 2022.

      As of December 31, 2024, the UAW reported total assets amounting to $1.18 billion, with $7.9 million available in cash. The union generated approximately $300 million in total receipts and had around $309 million in disbursements. Liabilities increased from $3.8 million to $6.7 million.

      The union's largest expenditure was $127 million for representative activities. Political activities and lobbying accounted for an additional $21.8 million. Another $48 million was spent on investments and fixed assets, $32 million went towards general overhead, and $9.8 million was allocated for union administration. The report also indicates that the union earned $219 million from membership dues and an additional $43 million from interest.
