While some car giveaways may seem dubious, others provide automotive enthusiasts an opportunity to acquire their dream vehicles that they would not otherwise afford. The apparel brand Tuner Cult has made several such gifts, including a 2016 Porsche 911 GT3 RS, which a man from Nevada won last September along with $50,000 in cash. Unfortunately, that purple Porsche met a disastrous fate last week, as the Storey County Sheriff’s Office shared images of it lying in a ditch along a mountain road.
The local authorities released a statement with details regarding the incident that took place on Friday, March 28. They reported that the Porsche was traveling at speeds of 80 to 85 mph in a 45 mph zone on State Route 341, also referred to as Geiger Grade Road. It appears the driver swerved to avoid colliding with another vehicle while speeding, crashed into a guardrail, and ultimately ended up down a dirt embankment with the 911 still upright.
A Google Earth screenshot highlights that Geiger Grade Road has a lot of twists and features a steep drop-off that poses a risk for drivers making errors. The road presents significant elevation changes and blind corners, whether driving uphill or downhill. This can present challenges for any motorist, especially in a high-performance vehicle such as the 500-horsepower 911 GT3 RS, and even more so when other traffic is present.

“The Storey County Sheriff’s Office reminds all motorists that Geiger Grade is not a racetrack,” stated the press release. “Geiger Grade is a steep, winding mountain road. For your safety, and the safety of others, please adhere to all traffic laws, including speed limits.”
The sheriff’s office indicated that the driver was taken into custody on suspicion of driving under the influence and possession of a firearm while intoxicated. They disclosed the name of the 32-year-old driver, which corresponds with that of the individual who won Tuner Cult's giveaway last summer, and the car description aligns as well. He was reportedly moved to the Storey County Detention Facility following his arrest.

Regarding the vehicle itself, the damage appears to be severe. The rear glass is shattered, exposing the roll cage painted to match the car. The engine cover seems damaged, the front and rear bumpers were torn off upon impact, and all exterior lights are broken. Given the photographs shared by the Storey County Sheriff’s Office, there are likely additional damages not visible, suggesting that the GT3 RS is probably a total loss.
The car was valued at a minimum of $175,000, as comparable models listed on DuPont Registry start around that price and can go up to nearly $250,000.
