While we haven't figured out time travel yet, browsing various auction sites is the best way to acquire a nearly new car that's 25 years old. However, securing a low-mileage example of a desirable vehicle is never inexpensive. Recently, Broad Arrow Auctions set a record by selling a 2000 Honda S2000 with only 42 miles on the clock for $95,000, which includes the buyer’s premium. This roadster appears immaculate and has never been registered.

If you've been tracking low-mileage S2000s for sale, you may recognize this car. It carries VIN JHMAP1149YT007691 and was highlighted on The Drive in November 2020 when it had just 34 miles. At an auction on Bring a Trailer in June 2021, it was bid up to $61,500 when the odometer read 37 miles. Later, in July 2022, Mecum sold it at 38 miles, though the final sale price remains unknown.

We learned about the car's history back in 2020, and it’s both surprising yet straightforward. In 2000, Hedy Cirrincione purchased a new red S2000 and continued to drive it daily when we interviewed her nearly five years ago. She quickly bought a second new S2000 with only 24 miles on it for $32,440 (approximately $60,000 in 2025) and stored it away, envisioning the day she would have a "new old" car. She never registered it, maintained it in excellent condition, and moved it from home to home as she relocated across the country. Ultimately, she decided to sell it when space became a constraint. In 2020, she expressed hoping to sell it for $150,000, a figure she recognized was somewhat ambitious.

The S2000 is certainly appealing, and since Honda hasn't produced another roadster in the U.S. since its production ended, one might wonder: is it worth $95,000? With that amount, one could purchase a new 2025 BMW M3 Competition xDrive ($87,175 including destination fees), a set of track tires, and still have some funds remaining. Ford's V6-powered F-150 Raptor is priced at $81,695, and there are plenty of used enthusiast vehicles available around that price range.

However, such comparisons may be somewhat irrelevant. The market has made its preference clear. Someone was determined to have a like-new S2000 and was willing to pay close to $100,000 for it. Even without the buyer's premium, this sale likely sets a record for an AP1-generation S2000 at a public auction. The most expensive AP1 S2000 auctioned on Bring a Trailer was a heavily modified 2003 model, which fetched $81,000 in August 2022 with about 42,000 miles. A 2001 S2000 with 950 miles and the factory-installed Aero Kit was sold by Cars & Bids for $43,210 in March 2024.

What would you do with a first-year S2000 boasting just 42 miles and a price tag of $95,000? Would you keep it in storage for another 25 years, hoping it appreciates to $35,000 more by 2050, or would you drive it and enjoy it while it depreciates? Share your thoughts in the comments.
