2026 Lexus RZ Introduces Yoked Steer-By-Wire and Simulated Gears | Carscoops
The refreshed RZ has a familiar appearance, but there are significant updates beneath the surface, including a trim option with 402 hp in the F-Sport variant.
Lexus will offer the new RZ in Europe in the RZ 350e, RZ 500e, and RZ 550e F Sport configurations.
It now includes simulated gears and synthetic ‘engine’ sounds to enhance the driving experience.
The specifications for the updated model in North America have yet to be revealed.
Lexus has been refining a steer-by-wire system for several years, optically taking time to perfect it rather than rushing it to the market. It appears this approach has paid off with the 2026 Lexus RZ, which will feature steer-by-wire technology. The updated model also introduces simulated gear shifts intended to enhance the driving experience.
As of now, the Japanese manufacturer has only released specifications for Europe, with details regarding the North American version still awaited. The base model, RZ 350e, has a single electric motor positioned at the front axle producing 224 hp (167 kW) and 198 lb-ft (269 Nm) of torque. The vehicle comes equipped with a 77 kWh battery pack, which provides an estimated range of up to 357 miles (575 km) for the RZ 350e.
Performance Variants
There are also two performance-oriented variants announced. The first is the RZ 500e, which features two electric motors that together generate 375 hp (280 kW), enabling acceleration to 100 km/h (62 mph) in just 4.6 seconds, along with an estimated range of 311 miles (500 km).
New to the lineup for the 2026 model year is the RZ 550e F Sport, delivering 402 hp (300 kW) and capable of reaching 100 km/h in a swift 4.4 seconds. However, this performance comes with a reduced range of 280 miles (450 km).
Steer-by-Wire
The standout feature of the 2026 RZ is its full steer-by-wire system. A prototype of this technology was tested back in 2023, and it's now ready for production. The system features a yoke steering wheel and offers variable steering ratios, with no physical link between the yoke and the front wheels.
Simulated Gears
Lexus has also drawn inspiration from Hyundai and Kia by incorporating a synthetic shifting system into the new RZ. Dubbed the Interactive Manual Drive, it is accompanied by simulated engine sounds. According to Lexus, this setup provides “a sportier, more responsive driving feel, offering greater engagement and driving pleasure.” We will have to test this ourselves to truly assess the experience with the new RZ.
Market-specific pricing for the 2026 RZ has not yet been established, but details for the U.S. version are expected to be available soon.
