To clarify, he's not the first president to advocate for cars at his residence, but perhaps he's the most overt about it.

On Tuesday, President Donald Trump hosted a promotional event for Tesla at the White House.
He was joined by Elon Musk, and together they effectively delivered a sales pitch about the automaker.
Their collaboration resulted in a modest increase in Tesla's stock price after a challenging few months.
Tesla seems to have established a new temporary showroom, and it’s located at the White House itself. On Tuesday, U.S. President Donald Trump and Elon Musk gathered on the South Lawn to talk about the company’s electric vehicles and some of the criticism Musk is currently facing. At one point, a note carried by Trump appeared—at least according to some observers—to be a comprehensive sales pitch directed at American citizens.
It is well-known that Musk and Tesla have faced growing scrutiny, primarily due to Musk’s political views. His position at the Department of Governmental Efficiency (DOGE) hasn’t helped matters either. Sensing a chance to demonstrate support, Trump took to social media on Monday night to make an impressive announcement: he planned to purchase a Tesla.

“I’m going to buy a brand new Tesla tomorrow morning as a gesture of confidence and support for Elon Musk, a truly great American,” he wrote. On Tuesday, the two appeared at the White House with a full showroom of Teslas. A photograph captured by a press photographer shows Trump holding a sheet of paper listing each car with its price, emphasizing that they are all available with Full Self-Driving for as little as $299 a month or $35,000.
Trump commended Tesla and Musk, stating, “because, number one it’s a great product, as good as it gets, and number two, because this man (pointing at Musk) has dedicated his energy and his life to this, and I believe he’s been treated very unfairly by a very small group of people.”
The President also mentioned that he intends to buy a Model S for himself and a Cybertruck for his granddaughter. It’s notable that sitting presidents are not permitted to drive, but perhaps Trump could change that for himself.

Perhaps the White House event was Musk’s attempt at some damage control. It appears to have at least boosted the stock, which rose over eight percent as of this writing.
A Wedbush Securities analyst who spoke to CNN noted, “The DOGE efforts have now intertwined Tesla into this brewing political firestorm. If Musk continues down the DOGE path 110% and pays no attention to Tesla during this turbulent period, brand damage will become more significant.”
It’s important to mention that Joe Biden once held a White House press conference to celebrate American-made electric vehicles, but did not extend an invitation to Tesla. GM, Ford, and Stellantis were present, though, unlike Trump, Biden did not publicly commit to buying a specific vehicle.
Some individuals are upset with Trump for showcasing Teslas at the White House today, but in 2021, Biden hosted an electric vehicle summit and invited GM, Ford, and Stellantis—but not Tesla.
