We Acquired Minottek’s Miata Gated Shifter Kit.

Last month, we featured a piece about the innovative gated shifter kit for the 1990-1996 Mazda MX-5 Miata from a small one-man operation called Minottek. Eager to see one of these kits in person, I contacted the owner, Ryan Conforti, to inquire if he had any local customers. After mentioning that I own a 1990 Miata, he generously offered to send me a free review sample. I proposed to cover his expenses, and we agreed to it, resulting in me now having one of these impressive products in hand, making a strong initial impression.

Upon opening the package, I found a charming printed note from Ryan welcoming me to the “Gated Community.” The kit was well-packed and mostly intact upon arrival. The 3D-printed jig that holds everything together did sustain some damage during shipping, but it still managed to keep all components properly aligned, and the additional bubble wrap protected the essential parts.

The packaging of the kit is quite clever as well. Although it consists of around a dozen individual components and the necessary hardware, what you actually take out of the box are effectively three main items: a pre-assembled base, the new shifter, and a replacement "boot" trim piece to complete your interior. Inside the shifter base assembly, you’ll find all the smaller components along with the required assembly hardware, making it very organized. The kit also includes the needed Allen key to detach the gate from the supplied lower shift boot/mounting plate assembly.

While there are no physical installation instructions included, the provided QR code leads to a comprehensive PDF guide that contains thorough disassembly and installation instructions, complete with photos. I have ventured underneath my Miata’s center console several times; it’s not a daunting task. These instructions will make the entire process a breeze, even for those completely unfamiliar with it. Kudos for the attention to detail.

The next step is the installation itself. I reside in a modest 1920s home just outside of Detroit, and this winter has been notably cold. Once I can comfortably move the baby Blackwing from its relatively warm winter parking spot, I will have full access to my NA to give this a try. Stay tuned!
