It's hard to believe that we are just a week away from the start of the 2025 Formula 1 season. It seems like only yesterday that I was complaining about the lack of racing, and now IndyCar, MotoGP, and WEC have all already held their first events of the season. Although Ferrari showcased its new team and drivers at the F1 75 event last month, they have been busy hosting promotional events in anticipation of the Australian GP. Just yesterday, they threw a major celebration on the streets of Milan, where Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton performed drift maneuvers for the enthusiastic Tifosi. However, I noticed a little mishap involving Hamilton.
When he exited his car (an older, retired model), Hamilton stood on the front fairing to wave at the excited fans. After a moment, he chose to jump off the car and let the crew take over. As is typical for drivers, he used one of the front tires as a step to avoid damaging the delicate aerodynamic parts around the sidepods. This time, though, the front end of the car had already been elevated, meaning the front tire could spin. You can see it in the video below.
As Hamilton placed his right foot on the tire, it rotated forward, causing him to lose his balance. Fortunately, instead of toppling to either side, he fell straight down, sitting on the tire. If he had leaned to one side, he could have ended up falling shoulder-first onto the ground or against the car. A loss of balance could have potentially led to an ankle injury or serious sprain, both of which would require significant recovery time.
Instead, the seven-time champion quickly brushed off the incident and continued as if nothing had occurred.
Strangely, this wasn't the first time Hamilton had an unexpected fall this month. During pre-season testing, he jumped off a moving golf cart while heading to the paddock and nearly lost his footing.
While these tumbles may seem minor, it’s important to remember that drivers have missed races, even season openers, because of silly situations like falling off bikes, rollerblading, tripping up stairs, and other small accidents.
