After a prolonged period of uncertainty, Cadillac is set to compete in Formula 1 in 2026.
Good morning,
The Cadillac Formula 1 team has been officially confirmed. Officials have announced that Cadillac has received the final clearance it required, and with the backing of TWG Motorsports and General Motors, the team is set to compete starting in 2026.
“As we mentioned in November, General Motors' commitment to establishing a Cadillac team in Formula 1 represents a significant and positive step in the progress of our sport,” stated F1 CEO Stefano Domenicali. “I would like to express my gratitude to GM and TWG Motorsports for their collaborative efforts over the past months, and I eagerly anticipate welcoming the team to the grid in 2026, which will promise another thrilling season for Formula 1.”
This has been a long-awaited development, marked by considerable drama involving GM, Michael Andretti, and Formula 1. We have been avid supporters of this initiative from the start, closely following all actions among the various stakeholders. At times, it genuinely seemed like it might not come to fruition due to some trivial issues.
The initial proposal by Andretti-Cadillac was turned down, there were conflicts between former Liberty Media CEO Greg Maffei and the Andretti family, and Michael eventually stepped back from his own company, so obtaining the final approval from all sport levels is a tremendous relief.

“We’re excited that the Cadillac Formula 1 Team is now official, as the team has been rapidly advancing its preparations,” remarked Reuss. “We are immensely thankful for the backing from the FIA and Formula One Management leadership, as well as from our partners at TWG. The anticipation only increases as we approach the chance to display GM’s engineering talent on the esteemed global platform of F1.”
Graeme Lowdon, the former Sporting Director of Marussia F1, will be the team principal of Cadillac F1, and initially, its cars will be equipped with Ferrari engines. Nonetheless, the newly formed TWG GM Performance Power Units will develop F1 V6 engines for its vehicles, establishing Cadillac as a fully-fledged works team by 2030.
It will be interesting to hear the perspective of Mercedes-AMG team principal Toto Wolff, who has consistently opposed the addition of the American team since the start. Despite Cadillac agreeing to a $450 million anti-dilution fee to mitigate the impact on prize money distribution among teams, Wolff argued that it was insufficient. “The compensation fee, currently set at $450 million, is too low and does not compensate for the direct loss in income,” he told German outlet Sport Auto in January, as reported by Planet F1.
Regardless of the opinions of team principals, Cadillac will officially join the top tier in 2026. The team boasts over 200 personnel focused on its chassis, aerodynamics, software, and vehicle dynamics across facilities in Fishers, Indiana; Charlotte, North Carolina; Warren, Michigan; and Silverstone, England. The remaining question is, who will be behind the wheel of its F1 cars?
