Winning an exotic car can be thrilling until you realize the expenses associated with owning one. Michael Mejia won Shakira’s purple Lamborghini Urus late last year, but he is now selling the SUV because he argues that the $90,000 the singer provided for registration, insurance, and maintenance is insufficient.

Mejia won the vehicle in December 2024 by entering a contest organized by Shakira to promote her new song titled “Soltera.” The song does not refer to the electric Subaru Solterra crossover; “Soltera” translates to “single woman” in Spanish, and Shakira wrote it following her breakup with former professional football player Gerard Piqué. To enter, fans needed to record themselves dancing to the song and share the video on social media.

In a February 2025 Instagram post, Mejia mentioned that winning Shakira’s Urus “changed his life,” garnering significant attention. Besides the social media buzz surrounding a car featured in a music video, this Urus is particularly eye-catching, wrapped in purple with a two-tone white and neon-green interior. However, as reported by People, the daily expenses of operating the SUV quickly accumulated.

“So far, all the taxes for transferring the car, legal fees, and six months of insurance have been settled. Now, federal taxes are due at the end of the year,” Mejia disclosed on the Spanish program El Gordo y La Flaca, as translated by Google. He stated that this totals approximately $95,000. He also mentioned that insurance costs exceed $2,000 monthly, which was unexpected, and he spends around $70 to refill the tank every two days.

Fortunately for Mejia, selling a high-value SUV owned by a celebrity should be straightforward. He has received an offer between $700,000 and $800,000, significantly higher than the market price for a three-year-old Urus; in fact, one could purchase three new Urus models for that amount. Alternatively, some individuals he has discussed selling the car with have suggested parting it out for more profit.

Whether the Urus is sold complete or in parts (who wouldn’t want a Lamborghini V8 for their Miata?), Mejia has a clear idea of his target price.

“I think it’s anyone’s dream to have their million. One million and one dollar; I’ll be happy,” he stated.
